MVNU Lecture Event Focuses on the Drug Issue in Knox County

The drug epidemic in Ohio is a key issue, and the Mount Vernon Lecture Artist Series has scheduled a special event to address and inform the community about several areas of this important topic. These special presentations are free and open to the public.

On Thursday the 24th, Judge Richard Wetzel will be speaking in MVNU’s R.R. Hodge’s Chapel Auditorium at 7:15 pm to open the Lecture Artist Event. Judge Wetzel will present his professional insight from the Knox County Common Pleas Court as he speaks on “The Difference Between Calling and Life.”

Following this presentation will be a public workshop on Saturday the 26th, in Thorne Performance Hall in the R.R. Hodges Chapel. This series of lectures will break down the science and societal impact of drug usage, and look into the path of recovery. The sessions begin at 9 am with Sheryl Hemkin, Professor of Chemistry at Kenyon College, who present how our bodies react to different substances and how me can make informed, healthier choices. At 10:00 Amy Smart, Director of Riverside Recovery Services, will speak about the impacts of addiction on employment, health, and society. Then at 11:00, Todd Farrell, a chemical dependency counselor for Behavioral Health Partners, will close out the event with a discussion of real life recovery situations and ideas on how society can fight against addiction.

WNZR had the opportunity to speak with several of the individuals involved with this special event. You can hear from guest speakers Sheryl Hemkin and Amy Smart, as well as MVNU’s professor of Biology, Dr. Paul Madtes, who organized the Lecture Artist Series.
