The Power of Prayer

This morning we talked about the Power of Prayer and how to talk to God. A big thank you to Christianity.com for there awesome article.

Talking to God

  • Prayer is not just the words you utter or even how you pray but more about the act of worship that is constantly glorifying God.
  • When we live a life of prayer we are communicating with the source and the purpose of our existence.

God Is All Powerful

  • Luke 1:37 states, “The Lord God Almighty can do all things; there is nothing impossible for him.”

God Asks Us to Pray

  • God invites, encourages and wants us to constantly talk to him. James 1:5 talks about how we are to come to Him in faith. Luke 18:1 talks about coming to Him with persistence and Philippians 4:6 explains how you should come to Him with thanksgiving.

He Answers Our Prayers

  • Psalm 17:6 says “I call on you, O God, for you will answer me.”
  • When we ask God to give us a love for our neighbors, he does. When we ask for patience, he begins to tend to our heart, uprooting areas of impatience and then provides opportunity to practice patience.

Power of Prayer and How Do I Tap In?

  • It is not just about the person praying and there is no magic formula. Praying is about an open heart that is filled with awe about our almighty God.
  • 1 John 5:14 – 15 states, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us – whatever we ask – we know that we have what we asked of him.”

Want to get your kids excited about prayer? Check out these fun activities.

Today (6/24), The Morning Thing shared some fun activities to get your kids excited about praying. Prayer is a wonderful tool that God has blessed us with for our spiritual walk with Him.

Check out these 4 fun activities from youversion.com

  1. Count Your Blessings. At the end of each day, spend 5-10 minutes talking about a few things that blessed your family. After everyone’s shared, thank God for the good He’s done in your life that day. Modeling thankfulness for your kids now will help shape the way they remember hard seasons. (Plus, focusing on your blessings can help lower stress levels.)
  2. Pray Through the Week. Each week, pick a theme with your kids. (It could be a country, a person, or something your children love.)Every day, have a child pray for that theme and allow whoever prays to choose a theme-related activity for you to do together. (Need activity ideas? You can find Bible-based coloring pages and Adventure Books here.)
  3. Go on a Nature Walk. The next time you go outside, ask your children to point out anything that makes them smile. Take turns thanking God for creating the beauty around you. Try to enjoy the world through their eyes, together.
  4. Pray through Praise Songs. Everything you do can be an act of worship. Pick one of your children’s favorite worship songs and sing it together. Make that song your prayer for the day.

Teaching your kids to pray

Today (5/20/21), The Morning Thing focused on prayer and parenting.

We focused on teaching your kids to pray. We shared some age level insights and how a kid’s perception of communicating with God changes as they grow.

Check out this informative article from mylifetree.com

Keep these things in mind as you’re teaching kids to pray and connect with God:

Prayer is an attitude. Praying constantly means we’re always aware that God is here. We can sense God’s presence with us no matter our circumstances. We can pray about anything and everything, including other people and their needs.

Prayer is a routine. Regular times with God help shape our prayer attitude. Help children establish “check in” times with God, not out of obligation but out of love.

Prayer is a first response. When troubles and tough decisions loom, we can turn to God before trying anything else. Prayer should be our first resort, not our last.

Prayer is listening to God. Prayer is a dialogue that involves letting God speak to us through everyday life. Because prayer is two-way communication, we also should practice listening to God.

Prayer is modeled. The best way to challenge your children to pray is by letting them see and hear you praying often. Regularly share with them how you see God at work through your prayers.

 Age Level Insights

Children’s perceptions of communicating with God change as they grow:

Ages 2 to 3: Young children understand that Jesus is their friend. Say (or sing!) simple prayers that relate to children’s lives.

Ages 4 to 6: Children this age become very aware of the world around them. Let kids know that God cares about everything that happens to them and other people.

Ages 7 to 9: These children feel a need for God’s help and can verbally express thoughts. Help them look up Bible verses about prayer.

Ages 10 to 12: Preteens realize God is more personal. Let them understand that no prayers are insignificant to their heavenly Father.

Conversation Starters

Start a discussion about the importance of talking and listening to God by asking children these questions:

1. Why do you think God wants us to pray to him? How often and how should we pray?

2. Does God hear and answer all your prayers? How do you know?

3. What does it mean to listen to God’s voice? In what ways does God speak to us today?

4. What things should we pray about together as a family? How can we add more prayer time to our daily lives?

It is See You at the Pole – the global day of student prayer.

see-you-at-the-pole-2016-01

This is the 26th anniversary for See You at the Pole, a student-initiated and student-led movement. This is the global day of student prayer!

This year’s theme is “WE CRY OUT” –A generation seeking Him!
The theme verses are Psalm 24:3-6:
Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord?
Who may stand in his holy place?
The one who has clean hands and a pure heart,
who does not trust in an idol
or swear by a false god.

They will receive blessing from the Lord
and vindication from God their Savior.
Such is the generation of those who seek him,
who seek your face, God of Jacob.

This day of prayer is part of a week-long emphasis on prayer for young people.
The GLOBAL WEEK OF STUDENT PRAYER (Sunday, September 25 through Saturday, October 1) encourages students to find new and unique ways, places, and times to pray throughout the week. Whether you attend PUBLIC SCHOOL, PRIVATE SCHOOL, or HOME SCHOOL, gather your friends wherever and whenever and pray! The GLOBAL WEEK OF STUDENT PRAYER is dedicated to prayer and launching your on-campus Bible clubs, prayer strategies, and student ministries.

Reports from See You at the Pole from Knox County:
East Knox had 31 kids and adults praying together today. 25 at the high school, 16 at the elementary school.
Fredericktown had 50 kids and adults praying at the pole. They spent time praying together and then broke up into smaller groups for prayer time.
Mount Vernon reports around 100 kids and adults today. (85 kids and 15 adults). They spent time in praise and worship, group prayer and smaller group prayers.

*Please let us know what happened at YOUR school. Call 740-392-9090 and share the story of YOUR See You at the Pole experience.*

For the last 25 years, See You at the Pole has been about one simple act—prayer. SYATP is still about students uniting themselves in prayer before God interceding for their generation.

Prayer and Pet Fire Safety – The Morning Thing 7/15/16

passion to pray

Do you ever struggle to pray? Do you feel like you need to pray, but you aren’t sure that you have time, or you really don’t know how to start?

We all know that prayer is powerful. The bible gives us many examples of prayers, so why do we struggle?
How can we cultivate a passion to pray inside us and within the ministries we lead?

Lee Nienhuis knows without a doubt that God led her into the Moms in Prayer ministry, where she serves as an area coordinator. Through a series of divine encounters, she experienced the way God pours out His mighty power when moms join together in prayer. God is on the move in Moms in Prayer, and she is filled with joy to join the work!

Click HERE to see 3 ways to cultivate a passion for prayer.
Lee shares her suggestions with us:
1) Express the desire
2) Create prayer grooves
3) Let “I don’t know” prompt prayer

Today (7/15/16) is National Pet Fire Safety Day! Do you have a plan for your pets in case of a fire? Click HERE to see some tips from the American Kennel Club. They share how to prevent your pets from starting fires, plus how to keep your pets safe in case a fire breaks out.
One thing you can do is to Affix a Pet Alert Window Cling. Write down the number of pets inside your house and attach the static cling to a front window. This critical information saves rescuers time when locating your pets.  Make sure to update the number of pets listed.

In partnership with the National Volunteer Fire Council, pet owners can obtain a free Pet Fire Safety Window Cling on National Pet Fire Safety Day, July 15th at local volunteer firehouses nationwide. Click HERE for more information about window clings.
