COOL things to look for in 2017 – The Morning Thing 1/9/17

Today we shared some things to watch for in 2017! Check out this list from CNN of cool things coming with the New Year.
Click HERE for the full article.

1. A solar eclipse

Next summer, a solar eclipse will darken southern cities like Charleston and Nashville for a few minutes. If you don’t live in the South, no worries! The natural blackout will be visible with less intensity in other major cities. If you want visit these spots, NASA has you covered. Just don’t forget to wear your sunglasses!

2. Moon adventures — for real!

Humans continue their leap in space, and Google is leading a moonshot effort. The company is rewarding three privately-funded teams who reach Earth’s moon by 2017. The requirements: A team’s rover must travel 500 meters on lunar grounds and send back high-definition footage. You know, because pics or it didn’t happen. Oh, and besides lunar glory, there is a $20 million grand prize on the line.

3. The return of TV favs

There’s important, big-dog TV coming down the pike. We’ll get Season 7 of “Game of Thrones” and, after a five-year hiatus, a Season 9 of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” Season 6 will be the last season for “Girls,” and in the streaming realm, Season 2 of “Stranger Things” will crawl out of the upside-down. In reality news, the former host of the “Celebrity Apprentice” is a little tied up with his new job, so new host Arnold Schwarzenegger will get to step into his shoes.

4. DeLoreans

The future is back! The DeLorean Motor Company is letting buyers reserve their timeless vehicle online. The famous car was basically its own beloved character in the ‘Back to the Future’ saga. The manufacturer is running late on production but expects to crank out a car per month sometime in 2017.

5. Superfast trains

Are super speedy trains in our near future? One company, Hyperloop One, envisions trains traveling as fast as planes, but without the turbulence. The company will test their fastest trains in 2017, with even bigger things to come. “The goal,” they say, is to move “cargo by 2020 and passengers by 2021.”

6. Drones EVERYWHERE

Amazon unveils new delivery service

Amazon unveils new delivery service 02:03
Drones are going to BIG. They’ll be everywhere! No really, everywhere. Google could soon make it rain with beer and pizza as they prepare to drone-deliver food from the skies to your doorsteps through the developing ‘Project Wing.’ Amazon will expand on its nascent drone operation in the UK, and mega-retailer Wal-Mart wants to use them too, to help maintain inventory in its warehouses.

7. Attainable ‘Hamilton’ tickets

cnnee pkg maria santana hamilton lin manuel miranda_00042707

Being one of the cool kids is about to get a whole lot easier. The record-setting Broadway sensation “Hamilton” is going national, which means you won’t have to travel to New York or Chicago, spend a million dollars, wait five years and barter your firstborn just to see it. Here is a list of stops. Good luck, they’ll still probably sell out in a matter of seconds. Oh well, there’s always 2018.

8. Sequels, sequels and more sequels

spiderman homecoming trailer

Who says Hollywood needs fresh, original ideas when they can make bucketfuls of money trotting out old ones? Get set for new entries in durable movie franchises like Spiderman (“Homecoming”), the X-Men (“Logan”), Alien (“Covenant”), Thor (“Ragnarok”), Pirates of the Caribbean (“Dead Men Tell No Tales”), Transformers (“The Last Knight”) and The Fast and Furious (“The Fate of the Furious”). And of course we’ll all take yet another trip to a galaxy far, far away when “Star Wars Episode VIII” takes over theaters (and the world) at Christmas. There will be a touch of sadness with this one, however, due to the death of Carrie Fisher. She had finished shooting her scenes for this one, so it will at least give fans one last chance to say goodbye.

9. Dave Chappelle

Netflix and chill is over. It’s about to be Netflix and laugh until you cry. After dropping his Comedy Central contract in 2005, the comedian is delivering a new stand-up comedy special on the streaming juggernaut. He’s also releasing two unseen shows from his personal vault.

10. New music and collabs

Yes, 2016 took so many of our music legends. But some of your favs will still be putting out new music. The Arcade Fire says its new album will drop in the spring, and it’s about time. Eminem will also get a strange bedfellow in…Adele? Yes Slim Shady and the 10-time Grammy winning singer will reportedly team up on his new album, his first since “The Marshall Mathers LP 2” in 2013. Oh, and and we’ll get “More Life” from Drake, which he considers more of a playlist than an album. Whatever, just give it to us!

11. The book everyone’s been waiting for

The sixth book in George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” series — which “Games of Thrones” is based on — could come out in March. It’s called “The Winds of Winter,” and Martin promises to open it with two big battle scenes.”The Winds of Winter” will also quickly resolve several cliffhangers left over from the end of the last book, “A Dance with Dragons.” We’re waiting, George!

12. A head transplant (?!)

Yeah, you read that right. A not-so-mad scientist plans to conduct the first human head transplant. Italian neurosurgeon Sergio Canavero says he has a volunteer — a man suffering from a muscle-wasting disease — so all he needs now is a body. The details of how the surgery will go down — like how they’ll get a body — are a little hazy, but Canavero says it’ll involve 150 people, 36 hours, really cold temperatures, bio-compatible glue and a diamond knife. Best. Craft project. Ever.

13. Nintendo’s next big thing

cnn money nintendo switch

Everybody seems hyped about the Nintendo Switch. It’s the first video gaming system that lets you, well, switch effortlessly between playing games on the big-screen TV in your living room or the tablet in your hand. The price for the Switch, due out in March, hasn’t been released yet, but all the cool kids on the internet are geeked up about it. Nintendo is, too: The company experienced lackluster sales of its Wii U back in 2012, so it’s really counting on the Switch to make a big splash.

14. The Kennedy assassination files

JFK Assassination: Who do you believe?

JFK Assassination: Who do you believe?

JFK Assassination: Who do you believe? 04:11
For decades, endless conspiracy theories have swirled around the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. But some details could add context to the tragic events of November 22, 1963 when undisclosed files on the case go public. There’s a catch: The man presiding over the office Kennedy held, President-Elect Donald Trump, will have the power to order these files sealed, if he so chooses.

15. Weird milk

Who needs cows? Not a California-based tech start-up called Perfect Day. It’s promising to put bottles of milk made without cows on store shelves by the end of the year. Perfect Day says making milk without the cow is a lot like crafting beer: It involves fermentation and yeast (and probably a little imagination). The company also says making milk this way is better for the environment, since the technique involves using less land, water and energy.

16. Surfin’ in The Eddie

It’s the one sporting event in the world that usually gets canceled by the weather. The Eddie is an invite-only Hawaiian surfing contest that takes place off of Oahu’s famous North Shore. Organizers only run it when conditions are right — when the waves are at LEAST 20 feet high — so the contest has only happened nine times in 30 years. The waiting period for the current contest runs until February 28, so everybody’s got their fingers crossed that the big waves will come.

17. Virtual reality (just in case things get bad again)

2017 could be the year that virtual reality finally gets real and fulfill all those promises that were made to us back in the 90s. The Samsung Gear VR (which works with Galaxy phones) seemed to make the biggest splash with the masses this year, and that won’t change going into next year. But the Daydream View from Google will probably make big strides next year too, as it becomes available to work with most Android phones. And Microsoft will put out a number of Windows-10 compatible VR headsets in the next couple of months, so consumers will have a ton of good choices.

The Morning Thing Fave 5 – New Year’s Resolutions

the-morning-thing-co-hosts

We have made it through the first full week of 2017! Congratulations!

This week for The Morning Thing Fave 5, the co-hosts are sharing our 5 resolutions for the New Year.
1. Eat Healthy. We all want to have a better diet that will put us on the road to a healthier 2017.
2. Make Exercise a part of our routine. Yes, this will help us be healthier in the new year. Putting exercise into our regular, routine schedules will hopefully create good habits for all of us.
3. Get MORE Sleep! Did you know that adults need a minimum of 7 hours per night to have a healthy life? AAHHH! All 5 of us need to work on this resolution – TONIGHT!
4. Be ON Time. We all want to show up on time, prepared and ready for whatever challenges that we face for the day. Being on time shows respect for the people that we work with and serve here at WNZR and MVNU.
5. Live IN the Moment. We are consistently planning ahead in our lives and jobs. We don’t want to miss the opportunity to enjoy what is happening NOW. The joy of life is found in the journey. We always think we won’t be happy until a project is finished, until we find accomplishment, but the memories are built within the process of accomplishing goals. Working together and cherishing each moment is the best place to live.
We pray that as you set your resolutions for 2017, that you will keep your eyes set on Christ. He has a perfect plan for you and your life.

January 6th is special – It is Three Kings Day, Epiphany or Theophany or Old Christmas. It is a day to celebrate the Magi!

The history of Three Kings Day
Also known as Epiphany or Theophany, Three Kings Day is a Christian feast day that celebrates the revelation of God in his Son as human in Jesus Christ. The observance had its origins in the eastern Christian churches and was a general celebration of the manifestation of the incarnation of Jesus Christ. It included the commemoration of his birth; the visit of the Magi, all of Jesus’ childhood events, his baptism in the Jordan by John the Baptist, and even the miracle at the wedding at Cana in Galilee.

Click HERE to read more about the history of this special day.

Today, Three Kings Day is celebrated around the world, especially in Latin countries.

Thousands of children in Latin America and Spain anxiously await “El Dia de los Reyes” celebration on Jan. 6th.

For many Christians, the holiday season doesn’t officially end until the 12th day of Christmas known as the “Feast of the Epiphany” or “Three Kings’ Day”.

The holiday marks the biblical adoration of baby Jesus by the three Kings, also referred to as three Wise Men or Magi. According to the Gospel of Matthew, the men found the divine child by following a star across the desert for twelve days to Bethlehem. Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar — representing Europe, Arabia, and Africa respectively.

Latin communities are not the only ones holding celebrations today.
The Amish Community will celebrate “Old Christmas” today. Click HERE to read more about this special tradition.

We hope that you can take a few moments today and celebrate the visit of the 3 wise men to see Baby Jesus. No matter how you celebrate, this part of the story is crucial to understand Emmanuel – God with us!

It’s 2017! Time to get organized. The Morning Thing 1/5/17

buried-in-papers

January is Get Organized Month. It is a new year with a fresh start and a perfect time to get organized.

Here are some surprising stats on how much time we waste because we are unorganized.

  • On average, we spend 6 minutes looking for our keys in the morning. IKEA
  • The top five items men look for in their homes are clean socks, remote control, wedding album, car keys and driver’s license. For women, the top five items are shoes, a child’s toy, wallet, lipstick and the remote control. IKEA
  • The average American wastes 55 minutes a day (roughly 12 days a year) looking for things they own but can’t find. Newsweek
  • The average office employee spends 1.5 hours a day (6 weeks per year) looking for things. OrganizedWorld.com
  • The typical executive wastes 150 hours a year (almost an entire month), searching for lost information. For someone earning $50,000 a year, this loss is equivalent to $3,842 annually.  Forbes ASAP

Here are 10 ideas for a more organized 2017. (from http://www.eventmanagerblog.com/)

Make Lists Your Best Friend

A checklist is the easiest way to stay organized. Take some time to create a basic checklist for every area of your business. For people who like to do everything by phone, tablet, or PC, there are a number of good apps out there (like Wunderlist).

Make Use of the Calendar on your Phone

All smartphones come with calendar access. The beauty of putting all of your information onto your mobile calendar is that most of us have our phones with us at all times. They’ll sync to your computer and your tablet so you’re always looking at real-time appointments.

Always Have a Spare Set of Keys

While this doesn’t seem much like an organizational tip, getting locked out of your car, home, or office is the surest way to get off schedule. It is difficult to stay organized when you’re working behind the eight ball.

Schedule Time For You

If you’re making lists and using your calendar, you need to make sure that you set those important appointments for yourself on your calendar. If it’s on your calendar it will be official. If you just try to squeeze it in, it will not take priority.

Keep a List of “Some Day” Activities

Even if it doesn’t feel like it, we all have downtime. From moments that you’re waiting for a client to show up to cancellations you didn’t expect, those stolen moments can be used if you have an idea of what you want to do with them. Since you don’t know when they’re going to happen, it’s important you keep a list of things you want to do “some day.” They can be small activities that take five minutes or they can be large planning sessions. Having activities that take up different amounts of time is perfect for stolen moments.

Create an Expectations Document for your Vendors

Whether you choose to have your vendors sign off on an expectations document or you simply use bullet points from the document when you’re having an initial conversation with them, it’s important to make sure that all of your vendors you’re working with understand your expectations from the beginning. When you’re auditioning several vendors at once, when you’re stressed out, when you’re extremely busy, all of these things leave you wondering what you told one vendor and what you told another. If you have a list or reference sheet you know that every initial consultation will be similar in what you convey to them. This will save you a lot of questions about whether you were clear on your expectations.

Go to the Cloud

If you’ve been considering going paperless in your business, you need to take it to the cloud either permanently or by using periodic, automatic backups with a product like Carbonite. Cloud storage ensures that all of your files are backed up and independent of the device.

Always Have a “Notepad”

Again whether you’re a paper person or you prefer apps, an organized person will always have something within hands reach to record thoughts, ideas, and things they need to check on. As much as this may annoy your significant other, you need something to record your thoughts even if those thoughts come in the middle of the night. Select something you’ll feel comfortable using because if you have to force yourself to use it, and you hate using it, you’ll eventually tire of it, and give it up.

Use a Read Later App

If professional development is a major priority for you in 2017, one of the best things you can do to organize your life and your professional development is to use a read later app. There are many out there and these simple apps virtually “clip” articles for you to read later. These read later apps often have the ability to make the materials available off-line too. That can come in very handy during stolen moments as you travel.

Get More Sleep

It is impossible to remain organized when you are extremely sleep deprived. If you’re functioning on less than five hours of sleep a night repeatedly you can expect that your mind is not operating at full capacity. If you want to make organization a top priority in 2017, you need to also make sleep a priority.

In Conclusion

If you are trying to get more organized in your life and in 2017, you need to slow down and do a little preparation work. Once you have the framework in place, it’s easy to build the structure around it. Structure will keep things running smoothly and will give you a great sense of organization and pride.

ATTAINABLE New Year’s Resolutions

keep-those-fitness-resolutionsToday we talked about healthy New Year’s Resolutions. Jessica Matthews, senior health and fitness expert for the American Council on Exercise and assistant professor of health and exercise science at Miramar College in San Diego, Calif. says the biggest mistake is setting unattainable fitness goals.

She said that, “While the spirit behind setting a New Year’s resolution is to make positive change to one’s health and fitness, so often people establish goals without being realistic about where they are starting from. Even if perhaps your current level of fitness is not where you want it to be, being honest with yourself about where you are presently and using that information as a baseline from which to work will help you to establish realistic, attainable goals for the new year.”

The goal is to set SMART resolutions. All fitness resolutions should be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. This enables you to see your success and progress throughout the year. For attainable fitness resolutions and more about SMART goals, click HERE!

We also talked about healthy eating resolutions that you can actually stick to! Eatingwell.com suggests we focus on the following five areas.

  1. Seek Out Seafood – aim to get 2 servings of fish a week.
  2. Pile on the Veggies – you should be getting 2-3 servings a day.
  3. Up your Fiber intake – the average American eats 14 grams but the recommended intake is 21-38 grams.
  4. Eat less Meat – this will help your heart and overall health. You should consider eating more tofu.
  5. Rein in your Sugar addiction – instead eat natural sugars found in fruit.

For more information about setting attainable healthy eating resolutions, click HERE!

A Look Back At 2016

Today on the Morning Thing, we focused on taking a look back at this year.

We shared some interesting events that happened throughout the year, including:

  • Jan 6 “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” breaks North American box office record, passing the $760.5m taken by “Avatar”
  • An unprecedented $1.6 billion Powerball jackpot that became a national fascination was split three ways, by mystery winners in Florida, Tennessee and California on January 13th
  • Jan 16 First ever flower grown in space – a zinnia aboard the International Space Station using NASA Veggie system
  • Feb 28 Actor Leonardo DiCaprio (finally!) won the Oscar for Best Actor
  • Mar 20 Barak Obama becomes the first US President to visit Cuba since 1928, arriving for a 2 day tour
  • On April 20 Harriet Tubman, an African-American abolitionist born into slavery, will be the new face on the $20 bill.
  • On April 21st Queen Elizabeth II — Britain’s oldest and longest-serving monarch — celebrated her 90th birthday

  • The Rio Games, the first in South America, were a 16-day spectacle that combined numerous highlight reel moments with ugly and even bizarre episodes. American gymnast Simone Biles asserted her dominance with four golds, swimmer Michael Phelps added five more to up his staggering total to 23 and the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, put on his usual show with three golds just days before turning 30 years old.
