Today on the show we talked about Drawing Day! Drawing Day reminds you that everything inside you is worthwhile and worthy to be shared with the world. It’s also there to bring much-needed appreciation and awareness to illustrators and artists. Anywhere you see a picture, from a business card to a beautiful mural on a painting, to every birthday card you’ve ever bought, an artist was designed in making it. The best way we can thank these creative souls is by picking up the pencil and making some noise for the lost and forgotten artists of the world, and maybe find a few more in the process.

We also shared some easy Art Therapy Tips to relieve your stress! See the entire list of ideas here!

One of the reasons that we are stressed is because most of us can never say no. We found an article on 3 ways to say “no” nicely. See the tips and tricks here!

We also shared some encouraging Bible verses about stress, and how God can relieve your stress because He gives you peace and comfort through His amazing power. See the link here!

It’s Chocolate Chip Day! How will you celebrate?

chocolate-chip-day1-764x382

Is there anything that makes life better than chocolate? How about portable chocolate?

Today is Chocolate Chip Day – a day to celebrate this easy to transport around, versatile treat! Did you know that the chocolate chip was invented by an accident in the kitchen?

(from www.daysoftheyear.com)

History of Chocolate Chip Day

It all started at a little place you may recognize the name of, the Toll House Inn. Located in Whitman, Massachusetts, it just happens to be the home of that most favorite of cookies, the chocolate chip cookie. Ruth Graves Wakefield had originally planned on making a chocolate cookie, and decided to do so by throwing in chunks of a chocolate bar into it. In a happy accident, it turned out that the chocolate did not melt and mix with the rest of the cookie, but maintained its shape, filling the cookie with delicious little chocolate bits.

Thus was born the chocolate chip cookie, and the Toll House Cookie Company! From that day forward there have been new forms of chocolate chip added, white chocolate chip, mint chocolate, milk chocolate, bittersweet chocolate, even dark chocolate! All of these varieties being added to delicious new recipes to create fantastic new treats for you to enjoy!

But it didn’t immediately go from chocolate bar to chocolate chip, there was a little innovation that happened in between first. Based off of the success of the cookies she made, Nestle agreed to add Ms. Wakefield’s recipe to their wrapper. What did they pay her for this honor? A lifetime supply of chocolate! Sounds like an awesome deal to us too! Nestle (and at least one other company) went on to include a chopping tool to help prepare the bars for use in cookies. That is, right up until 1941 when they started selling them as ‘chocolate chips’ or ‘chocolate morsels’.

How To Celebrate Chocolate Chip Day

Well, the first thing to do is remember that Chocolate Chip Day isn’t just about cookies, it’s about all the things you can include chocolate chips in! Pancakes, muffins, pudding, ice cream, granola bars, pies, these are just a few of the wonderful creations you can add them to. We’ll be honest though, our favorite way to enjoy chocolate chips? By the handful out of the bag.

Here are some recipes that we shared this morning:
Chocolate Chip Cheese Ball

Acorn Treats

Double Chocolate Banana Muffins

Graduation Caps

Get off the couch and get outside – a health tip from Reader’s Digest and The Morning Thing

dsc03578

Do you know America’s #1 anti-activity? It is sitting disease. It’s the top reason more and more of us are overweight. Our increasingly housebound, car-bound, office-bound, computer-bound lifestyle claims at least 22 hours out of most adults’ days in the United States.

Here is some math from Reader’s Digest: Add 1 hour for meals, 1 hour commuting, 8 hours on the job (or working in the home), 3 hours for TV, 1 hour for evening computer and phone time, 1 hour for waking-up and going-to-bed routines, and 7 hours for snoozing. That’s 22 hours in which you have minimal physical activity going on!

Here are some tips on how to get off the couch and get outside to improve our health.
Click HERE for the full article from Reader’s Digest.

1. Put on outdoor clothes the moment you come home from work. For most of us, work clothes are indoor clothes — you wouldn’t want to garden or play in a tie or skirt or dress shoes. Make it a ritual: arrive home, immediately switch into a T-shirt and shorts, and start the second part of your day afresh.

2. Keep essential gear by the door. Outdoor shoes, sunglasses, a brimmed hat, sunscreen, and bug repellent all are essential summertime outdoor gear. Have them all ready in the same place by your back door.

3. Match eating time with outdoor time. Lunch took 20 minutes? Then walk for 20 minutes outdoors immediately after eating. Dinner took 30 minutes? Balance it with 30 minutes outside. Make every meal a two-part affair: eating time and then outdoor time.

4. Garden in small batches. Most of us save up gardening chores for the weekend. The result: several hours of hard work, the last few not very fun. Instead, garden in 30-minute spurts all week long. This will get you outdoors more frequently, and you’ll never get bored or tired because of the brevity of the task. Best of all, come Saturday, your yard and garden will need only a little work, leaving you more time for fun!

5. Use weekday evenings more effectively. In the same vein, why shop, clean, and cook so much on the weekends? Do your essential weekly errands from 8 to 9 p.m. weekdays, and clear the way for weekend fun. You’ll find that stores are much emptier weekday evenings, making shopping that much less stressful.

6. Take more nature walks. If you’ve embraced walking as part of your weight-loss regimen, terrific! Now take it up a notch — put on trail-walking shoes, go to a regional park (the more rugged the better) with a friend or loved one, and take a wilderness hike. Bring water and a granola bar, and wander for a few hours of natural, soul-lifting exercise.

7. Assemble a toy box. What do you love doing outdoors? Whether it’s hitting wiffle golf balls, practicing your fishing fly casting, doing watercolor paintings, shooting basketballs, playing badminton, tossing tennis balls or a Frisbee with your dog, weeding the flower beds or exercising with a hula hoop, have your gear in a waterproof bin near your backdoor, ready for instant usage.

8. Schedule like crazy. Life’s dirty little secret: The most common Saturday conversation in America goes like this:
‘Whadayouwannado today?’
‘I don’t know — whada YOUwannado?’
Well, throw out that script. Picnics, hikes, bike rides, arboretum visits don’t just happen spontaneously; you need to plan them. During the week, be as specific in your planning as possible for your upcoming weekend. Don’t just suggest a nature walk for Sunday afternoon. Pick a time and place, and make a firm plan.

The National Day of Prayer: Join us for a time of Praise unto our God!

national day of prayer 2017-01Today on The Morning Thing we talked about The National Day of Prayer, happening tonight on the Public Square in Downtown Mount Vernon. The event starts at 7pm, and The Knox Network of Christian Ministries has some special things planned.

Race Ministries Band will provide music for the event. Local pastors and ministry leaders will pray for our community, our local, state and national government, and our families. If you can’t join us, listen to the service LIVE on 90.9FM, WNZR and here on wnzr.fm.

Our theme this year is For Your Great Name’s Sake! Hear Us… Forgive Us…Heal Us! Taken from Daniel 9:19, which says, “O Lord, Listen! O Lord, Forgive! O Lord, Hear and Act! For Your Sake, O My God.” As the 2017 National Day of Prayer on May 4 approaches, thousands of individuals, churches, and communities will be working to rally millions of Christian’s to once again heed this call!

Scripture tells us again and again that our fervent prayer is effective. That our loving God responds to His children’s earnest pleas in mighty ways that avail much, and ultimately determine the course of history.

For more info on tonight’s service, visit wnzr.fm

We also shared some Bible verses that talk about prayer, and the importance of it. You can see the entire list here!

In case of inclement weather, The National Day of Prayer service will be moved to Thorne Performance Hall on the Campus of MVNU. The service will still start at 7pm.
