New Years Resolutions you can actually accomplish!

Today on the show we shared some great New Years Resolutions that you can actually do this year.

Here are some of our favorite healthy resolutions:

1. Eat More Whole Foods

One of the easiest and most sustainable ways to improve overall health is to eat more whole foods.

Whole foods, including vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and fish, contain a plethora of nutrients that your body needs to function at an optimal level.

Research shows that following a whole-foods-based diet may significantly reduce heart disease risk factors, body weight, and blood sugar levels, as well as decrease your risk of certain diseases, such as type 2 diabetes.

What’s more, adding more whole foods to your diet can be done slowly and consistently. For example, if you’re not used to eating vegetables, start by adding one serving of your favorite veggie to your diet every day.

2. Sit Less and Move More

Whether it’s due to having a sedentary job or simply being inactive, many people sit more than they should. Sitting too much can have negative effects on health. In fact, it may be linked to an increased risk of overall mortality.

Making a resolution to sit less is an easy and attainable resolution that can be tailored to fit your lifestyle.

For example, if you have a desk job that requires long periods of sitting, make a resolution to go for a 15-minute walk at lunch or to get up and walk for 5 minutes every hour.

3. Cut Back on Sweetened Beverages

Cutting back on sweetened beverages is a smart idea considering that sugary drinks are linked to an increased risk of obesity, fatty liver, heart disease, insulin resistance, and cavities in both children and adults.

Though quitting sweetened beverages cold turkey is always an option, gradually minimizing your intake may help you kick your sugary drink habit for good.

4. Get More Quality Sleep

Sleep is an essential part of overall health, and sleep deprivation can lead to serious consequences. For instance, lack of sleep may increase your risk of weight gain, heart disease, and depression.

There are many reasons why people don’t get enough sleep, so it’s important to focus on your schedule and lifestyle to determine the best ways to improve sleep quantity and quality.

Decreasing screen time before bed, reducing light pollution in your bedroom, cutting back on caffeine, and getting to bed at a reasonable hour are some simple ways to improve sleep hygiene.

Christmas Eve Traditions!

Don’t have a Christmas Eve tradition for you and your family?

Check out these sites for some great ideas!

Here are some of our favorites:

1. Pajama Exchange

In more than a few families we talked to, each family member is allowed to open just one gift on Christmas Eve. Several of these same families know exactly what they’re opening: snuggly Christmas pajamas. This traditional kickoff to the giving and receiving of gifts gets everyone set for bed and looking cute for Christmas morning photos.

2. Christmas Eve Hot Chocolate and Christmas Stories

Before your little elves head off to bed, spend part of the evening drinking hot chocolate and sharing Christmas stories. Of course, you can always go right to the source for your Christmas story and choose a reading from the Gospel.

3. Have a Christmas Scavenger Hunt

Presents are great, but why not make your kids or grandkids work for their gifts from Santa this year? You can add a competitive element to your Christmas Eve celebrating by hiding the goods throughout the house, offering up clues about where they are as the night goes on.

4. Play a stocking guessing game

First, you need a host to put random things in a stocking. Once it’s stuffed, tie a ribbon or string around the top of the stocking so no one can peek inside. Sit in a circle and pass the stuffed stocking around so everyone can try to gauge what’s inside. Give them note cards so that they can write down what their guesses are. The person with the most correct answers wins the goodies!

The Knox County Park District will host their annual Fire and Ice event on Saturday, December 14 at the Honey Run Waterfall from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM. The waterfall is located at 10865 Hazel Dell Road, Howard. Parking will be located at the Millwood Church of Christ, 10900 Millersburg Road. Over 600 luminaries will light your paths to Honey Run Waterfall and the Kokosing State Scenic River. A roaring bonfire and a stunning display awaits those who attend.

WNZR’s Wesley Boston talked with Lori Totman, the Director of Knox County Park District. Click HERE to hear their conversation.

Both parking lots at the Honey Run Waterfall (both sides of Hazel Dell Road) will be closed and visitors will be redirected to the new Millwood Church of Christ located on U.S. 62 to park their vehicles. Electronic signage and volunteers will help guide the arriving guests. Knox Area Transit shuttles with Fire and Ice guests will be running circular routes from the church to the waterfall during the event.

This year, Food For The Hungry will have a collection point located at the new Millwood Church of Christ parking lot area. Fire and Ice patrons are encouraged to bring boxed or canned food items and/or make a monetary donation to Food For The Hungry. Volunteers will be on hand to accept the food donations and/or be able to accept the monetary donations. A $1.00 donation enables FFTH to purchase 10 food items.

Fire and Ice 2019 is due in large part to the generosity of the following sponsors: Ohio Rental, Miller Portable Toilets, Owl Creek Title Agency, Tracy and Mills Surveyors, Griffin Insurance, Revere Roofing Company, Millwood Church of Christ, Ariel Corporation and United Aggregates Inc. These businesses and the Millwood Church of Christ make it possible for the Knox County Park District to continue to provide this free, family-friendly, magical event for the community!
