All elementary schools around the county collected donations for Food For The Hungry last week. On Monday, 11/20, the collections were gathered into a storage building at Blubaugh Body & Frame. WNZR’s Marcy Rinehart talked with representatives from two local sororities about their involvement in this collection.
Psi Iota Xi coordinated the collection in the Mount Vernon elementary schools, at St. Vincent DePaulĀ and at the Mount Vernon middle school.
Delta Kappa Gamma coordinated the collection in the greater Knox County area, covering elementary schools in Centerburg, Fredericktown, Danville and East Knox. They also coordinated efforts at the Knox Learning Center.

A special event is coming on Friday, December 1 to Kenyon College. The 7th annual Snowflake Gala Dinner Auction will be held in Gund Commons. The night includes a wonderful dinner featuring a buffet of locally sourced foods, a live fund-a-cause auction, plus live music and a special award. Jim and Maureen Buchwald are this year’s recipients of the William A. Stroud Award for Public Service. Chairpersons for the event are long-time Food For The Hungry supporters, Jan and Ken Reynolds.

Mount Vernon Nazarene Universityās theatre program, MVNU Theatre, presents āThe Matchmakerā written by Thornton Wilder and directed by Keely Heyl. Wilder is best known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning plays āOur Townā and āThe Skin of Our Teeth.ā In this comedic play that inspired the musicalĀ āHello, Dolly!,āĀ a wealthy merchant hires a matchmaker to help him find a wife. Hilarity ensues as she becomes entangled in mischief with two of the merchantās clerks, several ladies, and a pair of waiters at the finest restaurant in town.

Director Keely Heyl approaches āThe Matchmakerā with innovative staging that couches the original story within a secondary story. About the production, Heyl states, āItās going to be a delightful adventure from start to finish. If you have seen the play or āHello, Dolly!,ā leave what you know at home. This will not be the same. While we are not the first cast to do a production this way, I think I can say we are the first ones to do THIS play this way. Your cheeks will be sore from smiling. There is a lot of darkness in this world, we aim to turn a few lights on and have a great time.ā Heyl, a 2013 graduate of Cedarville University with a B.A. in Theatre, has extensive experience working with various theatres in the central Ohio area.
Performances will be on Friday, November 3; Saturday, November 4; Friday, November 10; and Saturday, November 11. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. in Thorne Performance Hall inside the R.R. Hodges Chapel on the campus of MVNU. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for anyone under 18 or those with military ID. The performance on Saturday, November 4 will be super-titled in Spanish. Tickets for all performances may be purchased online at theatre.mvnu.edu, by phone at 740-397-9000 ext. 1620, or at the box office beginning one hour prior to show time. Seating opens approximately 30 minutes prior to show time.
āThe Matchmakerā is the first production of MVNU Theatreās 2017-18 season. She also talked about some of her favorite people to work with when writing and making music. For this week’s Meet the Team feature, we are featuring a group that worked on building a space balloon that recorded pictures of the recent solar eclipse. The 4H Space Balloon Team has been able to work with NASA on this project. They will also work with NASA on future projects.
WNZR’s Hannah Radke talked with their their team leader, Jeremy Funk. She also had a chance to talk with several student members of the team. Click HERE to hear their conversation.
The team successfully launched two balloons from Pennyrile State Park in Kentucky to record the August 21 solar eclipse.
Th team had full recovery, which means that the team has successful flight data from both the NASA balloon and the students’ balloon.
The team’s footage will be used in a NASA/Google “Eclipse Mega Movie”.
Several members will be attending the 8th annual academic high-altitude conference in October featuring solar eclipse ballooning.

WNZR’s Eddie Dilts and Dr. Spaulding talked about the start of fall semester, wrapping up summer construction projects and the goals for 2017-2018.
