First impressions and watermelon!

Today wewatermelon

It’s National Watermelon Day! Doesn’t this salsa look great?  It’s actually a Watermelon Fire and Ice Salsa that Dan and I found on allrecipes.com (click here for the link).

Today in the 6:00 hour, we shared some tips on how to make a good first impression.  Here’s a summary:

  • be confident in who you are (this gives others confidence, too)
  • be calm and composed (if you’re nervous, they might be too)
  • be yourself (don’t try to be or act like someone you’re not; be honest)
  • develop approachable and friendly body language (like a smile and a firm handshake)
  • avoid fidgeting (especially with your phone)
  • relax (have good posture but don’t be stiff like a robot)

Here’s another link to an article about first impressions from Forbes magazine.

Thanks for listening!

How To Have a Worry-Free Week

Feeling worried or anxious? Well today on the Morning Thing, we talked all about how to combat those feelings.

We shared an article from Joyce Meyer that you can find here, where she talks about where worry comes from and how we can combat it.

We also shared a list of 20 comforting Bible verses to look at whenever you are experiencing worry. You can find the complete list by clicking here.

Plus, we gave away a lot of prizes on the show today! Congratulations to Julie from Fredericktown who was our Bible trivia winner. Our question was “What was the name of Moses’ brother?”, and Julie correctly answered that it was Aaron. She picks up a $5 gift certificate to the Southside Diner.

Mervin from Mount Vernon was our next winner! He picked up a pair of tickets to see Uncommon Brilliance, the Heritage Center documentary that will be screened later this week.

And we gave away a pair of tickets to see Lauren Daigle and Matthew West at the Ohio State Fair this Saturday, and Sandy from Mount Vernon was our winner of those.

The Morning Thing is celebrating the Knox County Fair this week by sharing a Fair Fave 5 every day!
On Tuesday (7/26), we shared (more than 5) of our favorite Fair participants.

Here are some of your favorites:
Robin McClay  – My favorite fair participant is this years queen Holly McClay. Holly works hard on all of her projects but always finds time to help others. She begins every fair week attending the fair worship service with her family and does her best to follow and represent Christ through out the week.
Click HERE to hear Marcy Rinehart’s conversation with the 2016 Junior Fair Queen, Holly Mcclay.

Tomi Whittington Ward – My favorite fair participant would be my daughter , Reagan! She is showing broilers ( meat chickens) She has taken great care of her birds this year and we are very proud of her!

Jill Spearman Macklin – My favorite fair participants are my nieces and nephews who show hogs!!! And my brother who races his horses. I have 16 nieces and nephews who have all been fair exhibitors over the last 30 plus years. My dad, great uncle, uncles, and brother have all raced horses for years and years. My five brothers and sisters have all been in 4-H and or FFA and have all shown animals at the fair. Needless to say, my family enjoys the fair!

Ruth Robey Frady – I loved being a fair participant when I was a young girl in the 60’s. 4-H sewing groups were extremely popular, with countless booths filling up the huge project building. I proudly belonged to the Jolly Juniors 4-H Club, who were always winning honorable mentions with their elaborate displays protected behind that ever present chicken wire! I once tied for first place to take my lounge wear to the State Fair! With complimentary tickets all week long, this Jolly Junior practically lived at the Knox County Fairgrounds.(checking out all of the cute guys up in the livestock barns, of course)!

Original_Ryan-Reed_How-to-Clean-Cell-Phone-5.jpg.rend.hgtvcom.616.411

Did you know that your cell phone is covered in germs? Today, we shared how to clean your cell phone.
Numerous studies have been conducted in recent years, and the results are all pretty much the same. Essentially, your phone is a breeding ground for germs and it’s dirtier than a toilet seat. A few of the standout germs that could be lurking on your phone include E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus.

Games are GREAT – The Morning Thing 7/20/16

Family-Playing-Board-Game

Today, The Morning Thing talked about the benefits of playing games.

Does your family have a game night? You might think about scheduling one, once you see the many benefits of “playing together”.

www.beingconfidentofthis.com shares 6 benefits of playing games:

  1.  Quality family time.
  2. Media-free entertainment.
  3. Frugal entertainment. (It is NOT expensive to play games).
  4. Learning new skills.
  5. Learning sportsmanship.
  6. Learning about others.

Click HERE to read the entire article about how fun and entertaining game night can be for your family.

www.scholastic.com also shares the benefits of playing games.

What your child most wants — and needs — is to be with you with no goal in mind beyond the joy of spending time together. He wants you to take pleasure in him, play with him, and listen to him. Nothing bolsters his self-esteem more! So why not pull out an old board game tonight? Playing games is an easy and excellent way to spend unhurried, enjoyable time together. As an added bonus, board games are also rich in learning opportunities. They satisfy your child’s competitive urges and the desire to master new skills and concepts, such as:

  • number and shape recognition, grouping, and counting
  • letter recognition and reading
  • visual perception and color recognition
  • eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity

How to get out (and stay out) of the Doghouse! The Morning Thing 7/18/16

dog-house-1000x570

Today is Get Out of the Doghouse Day.

Are you in trouble with somebody you care about? Get Out Of The Doghouse Day is like a ‘get out of jail free card’ from the game Monopoly – use it to apologize, mend hurts and get back to normal.

We found 5 keys to getting out of the doghouse from www.allprodad.com

  1. Listen, listen, listen.
  2. Let the restitution fit the crime.
  3. Don’t sweat the small stuff (being right is very small stuff).
  4. Never minimize your culpability.
  5. Be randomly wonderful.

Click HERE to read the entire article.

We also shared 10 reasons that your marriage isn’t thriving. These insights are perfect for Get Out Of The Doghouse Day. As we take a look at our marriage relationship, we can identify what areas are sending us to the doghouse.

The bible gives us a clear picture of how to love. Please take a moment to read these powerful verses.

1 Corinthians 13 (NIV)

13 If I speak in the tongues[a] of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,[b] but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Prayer and Pet Fire Safety – The Morning Thing 7/15/16

passion to pray

Do you ever struggle to pray? Do you feel like you need to pray, but you aren’t sure that you have time, or you really don’t know how to start?

We all know that prayer is powerful. The bible gives us many examples of prayers, so why do we struggle?
How can we cultivate a passion to pray inside us and within the ministries we lead?

Lee Nienhuis knows without a doubt that God led her into the Moms in Prayer ministry, where she serves as an area coordinator. Through a series of divine encounters, she experienced the way God pours out His mighty power when moms join together in prayer. God is on the move in Moms in Prayer, and she is filled with joy to join the work!

Click HERE to see 3 ways to cultivate a passion for prayer.
Lee shares her suggestions with us:
1) Express the desire
2) Create prayer grooves
3) Let “I don’t know” prompt prayer

Today (7/15/16) is National Pet Fire Safety Day! Do you have a plan for your pets in case of a fire? Click HERE to see some tips from the American Kennel Club. They share how to prevent your pets from starting fires, plus how to keep your pets safe in case a fire breaks out.
One thing you can do is to Affix a Pet Alert Window Cling. Write down the number of pets inside your house and attach the static cling to a front window. This critical information saves rescuers time when locating your pets.  Make sure to update the number of pets listed.

In partnership with the National Volunteer Fire Council, pet owners can obtain a free Pet Fire Safety Window Cling on National Pet Fire Safety Day, July 15th at local volunteer firehouses nationwide. Click HERE for more information about window clings.
