Food insecurity is the unfortunate reality that at least some household members are uncertain of having, or unable to acquire, enough food due to insufficient resources. Knox County is one county in which food insecurity is on the rise.

Knox Needs is MVNU’s partnership with Food for the Hungry to provide meals and stable housing for our brothers and sisters in Knox County.

The Morning Thing Fave 5 – 11/11/16

The Morning Thing Fave 5 for the week of 11/14/16

For our Fave 5 this week, Marcy shares 5 of her favorite memories from her time at MVNU.

I came to MVNC in September of 1987. (It was a college at the time). I was a Communication Major studying broadcasting. Who knew that 25 years later, I would be sitting in the same studio using my training to minister to families every day.  Who knew that I would be helping train future broadcasters at this special place called WNZR. It is very difficult to narrow down my “favorite” memories of those 4 years in school. I will try to pull out some fun moments to share with you.

1. Opening Weekend for Freshman Year. I will never forget how nervous I was to be a new freshman at MVNC. For opening weekend, they had the annual Luau in the grove on campus. We all dressed in Hawaiian shirts with our “big hair” and pegged jeans. 🙂 I remember this event because several upper classmen came up and said hello to my group of friends. We had a blast and met SO many new friends. It was exciting to see that our 2016 Student Government Association brought this event back to Welcome Week.

2. My first trip to the Gospel Music Association Convention happened my Sophomore year. I was able to travel with other WNZR DJs to Nashville, TN to attend the Christian Music Broadcaster’s Convention. This experience was INCREDIBLE! I met numerous artists and radio professionals from all over the world. I can look back on that trip as a definite turning point in my life. God was leading me to see the path He had for my future in radio. It is also exciting that now as WNZR’s Station Manager, I have the opportunity to take students to this same conference to find God’s leading upon their lives.

3. DC Talk concert my Junior year. I will never forget seeing this groundbreaking new style of Christian music. Toby, Kevin and Michael performed on stage in the MVNC gym – now called the “old/Intramural” gym. I can still sing every word of Heavenbound, their first big radio hit.

4. One of the greatest memories happened my Senior year. I served as Concert Chairperson for the Student Government Association. It was my job to coordinate the concerts for the campus. We worked for months to bring Mylon and Brokenheart to campus. This was HUGE for our students and the community. I remember getting the rider (the requests and requirements to host the band) and feeling completely overwhelmed. It was over 30 pages!!! The workload was incredible, but the concert was amazing. The greatest memory though was when one of my best friends came up to me after the show and told me that she had recommitted her life to Christ that night. This show definitely changed a lot of lives.

5. Graduation has to be one of my favorite memories. The feeling of accomplishment of finishing your degree is incredible, but experiencing this moment with your best friends is even better. I remember the laughter and the tears as we said goodbye to our beloved Mount Vernon Nazarene College. I also remember that exhilarating feeling of hearing my name being called to the stage to receive my diploma – Marcella Elaine Street!

I am proud to be a member of the MVNU Class of 1991! 25 years! Wow! God has been faithful to the calling on my life including sustaining me over the past 20 years that I have worked at MVNU as WNZR’s Station Manager. I now look forward to see what God has in store for the future. I am also thrilled that my daughter Rachel is now a student here at MVNU, finding God’s path to her future.

2. Sports. It’s fun to be a fan! It’s also fun to be a participant. At MVNU, there are many opportunities to cheer for our collegiate athletes. There are also many opportunities to get in the game, especially through intramurals. We encourage everyone to become a “Cougar Crazie” and join the fun. *You can follow MVNU sports with WNZR. Go to http://www.wnzr.tv and watch live competitions through our video streaming.*
3. Chapel. MVNU is proud to offer 3 services each week, 10:20am – 11:10am. Chapel is a wonderful opportunity to connect with other students and strengthen your spiritual walk. This time is a perfect chance for students to gain focus and encouragement for their busy lives. *You  can watch chapel LIVE at http://www.mvnu.tv*
4. Trips. MVNU offers SO many opportunities to travel, both in the US and to international destinations. Trips give us incredible learning experiences, plus lifelong memories. Our Morning Thing co-hosts have traveled to New York, Florida, Tennessee and California.
5. Events on campus. MVNU’s calendar is always full of fun events for both the campus and surrounding community. Thoughts from Israel- The Morning Thing on 3/14/16

Wesley Israel

Wesley Boston here. I recently returned from an incredible opportunity. From February 29th to March 11th I traveled across Israel and Jordan, seeing sites that brought the Bible to life and being introduced to cultures and people that were very different from me. A few things struck me as a result.

  1. The world is a lot bigger than America. Our guide, Rafi, who is seen in the above picture at the left end of the back row, reminded us that the U.S. is big- so big that we don’t need anybody else he said. Israel, to compare, is smaller than New Jersey. In the U.S. we don’t get out much, we don’t see much that is different, and we dont get out of our comfort zones. It’s good in so many ways to get into someone else’s country, culture, kitchen, history, etc.
  2. Differences in race, culture, and religion can be put aside. On this trip a Muslim man looked me, a Christian, in the eye and asked me to pray for peace in these lands. Two religions with two different Gods, but that didn’t matter. We could be united in this cause. One girl that I traveled with remarked that while watching the Jews pray at the Western “Wailing” Wall she realized that we aren’t so different. We all are simply trying to get closer to God.
  3. We believe and have faith in a God who does not operate in an abstract dimension or some Narnia -esque realm that we can’t get to or see. He works in real history, in real places, and with real people. While we can’t have definite proof and still have to trust and have faith, we can take comfort in knowing that we can see the places where the Bible tells us these things happened.
  4. History keeps going on. Rafi reminded us on the first day that since our our country is so young we have a different view of what is old. In his words, “You Americans find something that is 250 years old and you call it an antique. In Israel if something is 250 years old we don’t even look at it- it’s brand new! Come back when you have something from the 3rd or 4th century.” In that land I saw the remains of empire after empire and civilization after civilization. I stood in the ruins of palaces of mighty kings and the temples of foreign gods. History marches on and takes everything that mankind builds with it. But God remains. He is unchanged from the beginning and will still be here in another 2,000 years.
  5. We have a personal relationship but not a personal religion. By that I mean that while we are able to know God personally as our God and Savior it isn’t just about us. We are part of a worldwide community of believers that spans throughout history. Every one of us across the globe brings our own interpretations and culture and backgrounds to it but we are all one body serving the same risen Lord.
  6. We don’t have to travel around the world to be closer to God. This thought was not original with me. I was struggling with the fact that I had not had some kind of supernatural revelation or some experience where God broke through into my life in some brand new crystal clear way. Then one girl on the trip shared that she was struggling with the same issue- and then she realized that there’s a good reason for it. God is with us no matter where we are. We can be just as close to Him here in Ohio as we can in the Holy Lands. I have stood as close to the Holy of Holies as is humanly possible in 2016- but that didn’t make me any closer to God than I am right now as I write these words in Mount Vernon. God is with you and me no matter where we are and that is a great comfort.

It’s hard to sum up such an experience in one post, but these are a few of the things that God put on my heart during this journey. And yes, it was good to go- amazing to go- but it is good to be back. Hopefully the lessons I’ve learned can influence the way I live day to day.

Shalom!
