Spark your creativity! The Morning Thing 9/21/16

creativity

Do you feel creative? Need a spark?
The Morning Thing shared 17 easy ways to get your creative juices flowing from www.justcreative.com

Some of our favorite ideas include:

* Read a Book

The more people read, the more their minds open up. This allows mind to think of new ideas which result in becoming more creative. All it takes is reading about a half hour before going to bed at night.

* Make a Note of Ideas

As soon as an idea forms, write it down. After it’s written down, the brain is free to form another idea.

* Listen to Sound

There are sound frequencies that have a positive result in increasing the creativity and performance of the brain. When these sounds are listened to, a person can see the positive effect it has had on their creativity and thinking.

* Anti-Oxidants

Eating blueberries will provide the richest of anti-oxidants, and a few of them should be eaten every day. They are great for raising the thinking ability of the brain.

* Be A Flexible Thinker

Flexible thinkers have the capacity to control and direct their thoughts. This way of thinking allows them to adjust to a novel way of thinking. They can also apply this to what they perceive and can focus on the situation at hand.

Our brain has the ability to rewire itself and can physically adjust to our new ways of thinking. A flexible mindset shoves away all patterns of limiting thought, and goes to a serene place of possibilities and openness to creativity.

The Morning Thing LOVES MVNU!

Opening ceremony

Today, we wrapped up “Back to College” week on The Morning Thing. The campus of Mount Vernon Nazarene University is buzzing with activity as students return for the 2016-2017 school year.

New students moved in on Thursday 9/1. Upperclassmen return to campus today and tomorrow.
We talked with Dr. Henry Spaulding, MVNU’s President to find out more about what is happening on campus. Click HERE to hear our September MVNU Presidential Update.

For our Morning Thing Fave 5, we shared our 5 favorite college experiences.
1. Participating in groups. We love the learning experiences and the opportunities to build lifelong friendships. Sometimes the group is part of a class or an extra-curricular activity. Groups always give us a chance to have fun and gain a different perspective on life.
2. Sports. It’s fun to be a fan! It’s also fun to be a participant. At MVNU, there are many opportunities to cheer for our collegiate athletes. There are also many opportunities to get in the game, especially through intramurals. We encourage everyone to become a “Cougar Crazie” and join the fun. *You can follow MVNU sports with WNZR. Go to http://www.wnzr.tv and watch live competitions through our video streaming.*
3. Chapel. MVNU is proud to offer 3 services each week, 10:20am – 11:10am. Chapel is a wonderful opportunity to connect with other students and strengthen your spiritual walk. This time is a perfect chance for students to gain focus and encouragement for their busy lives. *You  can watch chapel LIVE at http://www.mvnu.tv*
4. Trips. MVNU offers SO many opportunities to travel, both in the US and to international destinations. Trips give us incredible learning experiences, plus lifelong memories. Our Morning Thing co-hosts have traveled to New York, Florida, Tennessee and California.
5. Events on campus. MVNU’s calendar is always full of fun events for both the campus and surrounding community. Some of our favorite events include: Sonfest (coming 9/24), Lecture Artist Series, concerts, plays and conference. *You can stay connected to MVNU’s calendar at this link http://www.mvnu.edu/news/PressReleases/ *

Today Eddie flew solo, and discussed back to school conversation starters, and how to get more than just one word out of someone who is tired after a long day at school.  The key was to be specific but not too specific, and for examples we used these examples from imom.com.

We also had an interview with Camille and Haley Harris, who are performing a benifit concert for the film hit Back on Heroin.  It is happening this Saturday at the Gazebo at MVNU’s grove at 7:30PM.

Understanding Your Teen: The MT’s Guide to Slang

Have you ever wondered what in the world some of the words that your teens use mean?! Well today, we’re trying to help you!

Here are some of the words we decoded on the show:

  • Ship: Used as a verb, meaning you want 2 people to be in a relationship. Especially popular with fictional characters
  • TBH: An abbreviation of “to be honest”, can be used in everyday conversation when someone is giving their honest opinion about something. Someone could say “TBH, I don’t really like watching the Olympics”
  • Lowkey: A synonym for “kind of”, “slightly”, or “a little bit”. The opposite would be highkey, meaning “very” or “a lot”
  • Woke: Used in the phrase “stay woke”, which means to “stay alert” or “be ready”
  • Salty: When someone is upset or bitter about something
  • OTP: An abbreviation for “One True Pair”; two people who you think are meant to be together.
  • Basic: Ordinary or plain, can also mean like everyone else
  • Gucci: Means cool or good
  • Peep: To look at or listen to something, such as “You should peep this new song”
  • GOAT: An acronym for “Greatest Of All Time”, usually used to refer to a person
  • Slay: When someone succeeds at something amazing, or if they “killed it” at something. For example, you could say “Katie Ledecky slayed in the Olympics 400 meter swim”
  • Fangirl: Can be used to describe someone who is a really big fan of something. Can also be used as a verb when someone gets excited about whatever they are a fan of, such as “I’m fangirling over the new trailer for that movie”
  • Lit: When something is amazing or exciting

Hopefully that helps you understand your teens and their confusing language a little better! Be sure to let us know if there are any other terms we left out that your teens use!

Have a great week!

-Jess and Marcy

knox county fair 2016_v

The Morning Thing is celebrating the Knox County Fair this week by sharing a Fair Fave 5 every day!
On Tuesday (7/26), we shared (more than 5) of our favorite Fair participants.

Here are some of your favorites:
Robin McClay  – My favorite fair participant is this years queen Holly McClay. Holly works hard on all of her projects but always finds time to help others. She begins every fair week attending the fair worship service with her family and does her best to follow and represent Christ through out the week.
Click HERE to hear Marcy Rinehart’s conversation with the 2016 Junior Fair Queen, Holly Mcclay.

Tomi Whittington Ward – My favorite fair participant would be my daughter , Reagan! She is showing broilers ( meat chickens) She has taken great care of her birds this year and we are very proud of her!

Jill Spearman Macklin – My favorite fair participants are my nieces and nephews who show hogs!!! And my brother who races his horses. I have 16 nieces and nephews who have all been fair exhibitors over the last 30 plus years. My dad, great uncle, uncles, and brother have all raced horses for years and years. My five brothers and sisters have all been in 4-H and or FFA and have all shown animals at the fair. Needless to say, my family enjoys the fair!

Ruth Robey Frady – I loved being a fair participant when I was a young girl in the 60’s. 4-H sewing groups were extremely popular, with countless booths filling up the huge project building. I proudly belonged to the Jolly Juniors 4-H Club, who were always winning honorable mentions with their elaborate displays protected behind that ever present chicken wire! I once tied for first place to take my lounge wear to the State Fair! With complimentary tickets all week long, this Jolly Junior practically lived at the Knox County Fairgrounds.(checking out all of the cute guys up in the livestock barns, of course)!
