Mount Vernon Nazarene University will present the 50th annual performance of G. F. Handel’s Messiah on Sunday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. This free event will take place in the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Auditorium on the MVNU campus.

With the opening fall semester of MVN(C)U in 1968, the university’s presentation of Handel’s Messiah began. As a celebrated event in Knox County and the surrounding region, it has been a privilege for the Department of Music to continue the tradition with this 50th annual performance.

This year’s presentation will be performed by the MVNU Choral Union, faculty and guest soloists and chamber orchestra. The featured soloists are Elizabeth Barrett, MVNU music faculty member; Carolyn Redman, 1989 MVNU music alumna, classical performer and adjunct voice professor at Kenyon College and Otterbein University; Tyler Skidmore, 2004 MVNU music alumnus, music specialist with the Medina, Ohio, City School District and frequent area vocalist. And returning for his twentieth year as bass soloist is David Templeton, Associate Professor of Voice and Director of Opera at The College of Charleston, Charleston, South Carolina. John Packard, MVNU Music Department Chair, and guest musician Michael Eaton will assist on trumpet. David Robinson will return as the harpsichordist and Sharon Blaydes is the concert master.

The 160-voice Choral Union includes the combined choirs of MVNU as well as faculty, staff, alumni and community singers. Conducting the performance will be Dr. Robert Tocheff, Professor of Music in the MVNU Music Department.

The program is open to the public without admission charge. Donations will be accepted. Parking is available from Martinsburg Road and Campus Drive. For more information, visit http://www.mvnu.edu or contact Tressa Daley at (740) 397-9000, ext. 3000.
