First impressions and watermelon!

It’s National Watermelon Day! Doesn’t this salsa look great?  It’s actually a Watermelon Fire and Ice Salsa that Dan and I found on allrecipes.com (click here for the link).

Today in the 6:00 hour, we shared some tips on how to make a good first impression.  Here’s a summary:

  • be confident in who you are (this gives others confidence, too)
  • be calm and composed (if you’re nervous, they might be too)
  • be yourself (don’t try to be or act like someone you’re not; be honest)
  • develop approachable and friendly body language (like a smile and a firm handshake)
  • avoid fidgeting (especially with your phone)
  • relax (have good posture but don’t be stiff like a robot)

Who is YOUR favorite Knox County Fair participant? The Morning Thing 7/26/16

The Morning Thing is celebrating the Knox County Fair this week by sharing a Fair Fave 5 every day!
On Tuesday (7/26), we shared (more than 5) of our favorite Fair participants.

Here are some of your favorites:
Robin McClay  – My favorite fair participant is this years queen Holly McClay. Holly works hard on all of her projects but always finds time to help others. She begins every fair week attending the fair worship service with her family and does her best to follow and represent Christ through out the week.

Tomi Whittington Ward – My favorite fair participant would be my daughter , Reagan! She is showing broilers ( meat chickens) She has taken great care of her birds this year and we are very proud of her!

Jill Spearman Macklin – My favorite fair participants are my nieces and nephews who show hogs!!! And my brother who races his horses. I have 16 nieces and nephews who have all been fair exhibitors over the last 30 plus years. My dad, great uncle, uncles, and brother have all raced horses for years and years. My five brothers and sisters have all been in 4-H and or FFA and have all shown animals at the fair. Needless to say, my family enjoys the fair!

Ruth Robey Frady – I loved being a fair participant when I was a young girl in the 60’s. 4-H sewing groups were extremely popular, with countless booths filling up the huge project building. I proudly belonged to the Jolly Juniors 4-H Club, who were always winning honorable mentions with their elaborate displays protected behind that ever present chicken wire! I once tied for first place to take my lounge wear to the State Fair! With complimentary tickets all week long, this Jolly Junior practically lived at the Knox County Fairgrounds.(checking out all of the cute guys up in the livestock barns, of course)!

Mount Vernon mourns the loss of 17 year old Chelsie Alaimo. (Updated)

Local student dies after accident

Mount Vernon Police and the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating an accident last night that took the life of a Mount Vernon High School senior.

17-year-old Chelsie Alaimo of Mount Vernon was struck and killed by a vehicle at the intersection of Mansfield Road and Belmont Avenue last night. Social media updates from family and friends indicate that Chelsie was transported to Knox Community Hospital, where she died from her injuries. Police remained at the scene until late last night.

Mount Vernon High School and Middle School staff and counselors will be available for students today.  Chelsie Alaimo was a member of the high school marching band and was part of the cast of The Secret Garden musical this past weekend.

Our condolences and prayers are with her family.

Funeral services will be held at Mount Vernon First Church of the Nazarene on Coshocton Ave. in Mount Vernon. Details of the date and time will be shared soon.

This afternoon/evening from 4 to 7 PM, at First Church of the Nazarene (807 Coshocton Ave.), the Sanctuary will be open for friends and family who just need a quiet place to reflect. Staff members of the Youth Ministry Team will be available to pray with anyone who just needs someone to “share their burden.” This will be a very quiet, no-pressure event – they just want to love on friends and family members during this difficult time. Join us this evening – pray, think, cry, support one another, ask questions. Just know that they are here for you!

Latest update from the Mt. Gilead Ohio State Patrol Post.

Knox County- Mount Vernon – The Ohio State Highway Patrol is currently investigating a fatal crash. The crash occurred at approximately 7:20 pm on Sunday November 8, in the city of Mt. Vernon, Knox County on Mansfield Ave. near Belmont Ave.

Curtis W. Hull, age 32, of Mount Vernon, Ohio was operating a Silver 2005 Chevrolet trailblazer southbound on Mansfield Ave. Chelsea R. Alaimo age 17 of Mt. Vernon, Ohio was crossing Mansfiled Ave. on foot. Mr. Hill struck Miss Alaimo as she was crossing the street.

Miss Alaimo was transported to The Knox County Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by the Mount Gilead Patrol Post.
