Thankful thoughts on Thanksgiving Day

Today is Thanksgiving!  🙂  Well, you probably know that.

I am sitting in the WNZR studio having a blast doing The Morning Thing.  We decided to give away prizes throughout the morning to listeners who were actually up early on Thanksgiving.  It’s been so much fun to hear their thankful thoughts.
So what are you thankful for?

I am thankful for so many things:
– A God that loved me enough to send his son to earth to give me a chance to have eternal life.
– A strong Christian heritage.  I know that God is faithful.  I have seen Him work miracles in the lives of those that I love.
– A fun family!  I love getting together to laugh.  My brothers and sisters are crazy and SO much fun!
– A loving husband and daughter.  I am SO thankful for Joe and Rachel.  They are both special gifts from God.
– A wonderful job that allows me to share my faith.  I love working at WNZR!  I can’t believe that this is my 15th year as Station Manager of WNZR. WOW!
– A caring and giving community.  I am truly thankful to be part of the Knox County community.  We work together to help those who need it.  In any tragedy, we are there to join hands and reach out wherever and however it is needed.

WOW!  That was pretty good in 10 minutes.
Please take a minute today to list some things you are thankful for.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Sarah Boston is thankful to be home

Yay! It’s Thanksgiving! I am so excited to be at home with family for the first time since May. It has been awesome catching up with my mom these past few hours. The best thing about coming home for me is that I feel like absolutely nothing has changed. Sure there’s the latest scandal, but my house still looks like it did when I left, my brother and dad are in West Virginia deer hunting, and the family dog, Baxter, is just as happy to see me. I have a lot of reasons to be thankful, but we have all heard the broken record of things that we are thankful for family, friends, our jobs and the list goes on…
Yes, I realize that it’s not “bad” to be thankful for these things. In fact, I am very, very thankful for them, but I like to look at things differently. So when the family goes around the dinner table stating what they are thankful for this holiday season, I will be the strange one who doesn’t go for the ordinary.
This year, I am thankful for laughter. Honestly, I feel like sometimes when life is about to drive me crazy, it’s laughter that saves me. I absolutely love to laugh and to make others laugh as well. It seems to be very therapeutic for me. I can laugh at my mistakes as well as others (as long as they let me). I can laugh in the happy times as well as the sad times. God has blessed me with this, and I thank Him for that.
I encourage you this holiday season to not only take time to be thankful for the ordinary things, but be thankful for the abstract things as well. If it is one thing that I’ve learned throughout life, it is to be happy for the little things and small joys as well as the big ones.
I hope that you have a very, very VERY happy Thanksgiving with all the trimmings and lots of laughs!

My Rise and Shine Debut: A Blog About Being Thankful

Good Morning!

As a social media junkie I was shocked when I realized I have yet to post to The Morning Thing’s blog and this just won’t do. Since it’s the day before Thanksgiving, I obviously find the topic of thankfulness to be appropriate. (It’s a good thing I have a lot to be thankful for!) I could list off the things that always come up: family, friends, a brand new engagement (to a cute guy, to boot!),  all the wonderful things I’m blessed to have. But today I’m especially thankful for something not usually on that list, WNZR.

When I first arrived at MVNU I really had no interest in radio. Now, as the fall semester of my junior is coming to a close, I realize I don’t know what I would do without WNZR in my life! I’ve come to learn so many things in the classroom and in the studio and even on location that I probably wouldn’t have the chance to learn anywhere else. WNZR is like a second home. A place where I can come to learn, laugh, and be with people I love who are there for me when I need them.

With this in mind I can’t help but look back at the tragedy that began to unfold two weeks ago today. While I watched, waited, and eventually mourned with the rest of Knox County, I realized how thankful I was for WNZR. I was always able to flip on the station when I was commuting from MVNU to my house to hear the latest news, and I had to opportunity to be involved in the reporting first-hand when I attended one of the press conferences held at the sheriff’s office. Not only was WNZR a source of comfort in this terrible event, it was also a source of hope. Everywhere I turned I was bombarded with the terrible news but flipping to 90.9fm I was reminded of the hope we can have in Jesus Christ and the undoubtable power of prayer. It opened my eyes to a whole new appreciation for this radio station and all the good it’s done in my life.

So THANK YOU, WNZR! When it’s time to list what I’m thankful for and count my blessings, I know what will be on my list. I hope you and your family can count your blessings this holiday weekend and remember how much you have to be thankful for.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Kaylee

Learning to Praise God in the Storm

Well, it has been a week.

Throughout all of the events that occurred on campus and the reported tornadoes and devastation in my hometown of Reedsville, Ohio, I have been stressed and worried for my dear friends and loved ones. I feel as though my entire way of life has been effected. I will admit that I am a bit of a control freak who likes to stay in her realm of comfort, so this has been a real stretch for me. But throughout my processing of these events, I feel like God is trying to tell me something. He is reminding me that He is in control and that I need to remember to praise Him throughout whatever problems I may face. Over the weekend I aspire to relax and spend sometime focusing on God’s promises and seeking His will for my life. Perhaps God’s telling me to give you this little reminder as well.

Have a great weekend!

God bless,

Sarah

Labor Day weekend blues

Today is the first day of Labor Day weekend.  Many people left work today super excited about having 4 days off.  They are ready to enjoy the last little bit of summer. I actually saw lots of smiles at each stoplight on my way home today.  It reminded me of Christmas.

I can’t help but think about all the people that WILL work this weekend.  The pizza guy on his way to my house, the grocery checkout girl, the police officer and the DJ.  🙂  Yep – my staff works this weekend and I will work on Monday.  Do I have the blues?  No, not really because I just had a week off for vacation.  Does anyone else have the Labor Day working blues?  I think yes.  You could probably find someone working over the weekend that would rather be sitting in the sun, cooking at the barbeque or hanging out with family or friends.

So…I SALUTE the Labor Day weekend workers!  May your hard work and commitment be honored! May your customers and/or clients be gracious and thankful that you are serving them.  May the tips be large, may the words “thank you” be heard and may the many laborers feel appreciated.
Now…I am not saying that you should feel guilty if you have 4 days off.  Enjoy it!  But – why should we wait until the first Monday of September to think about “thanking” and “honoring” our laborers?  Let’s learn to say thank you on a regular basis.

Hey – I have to go get a bigger tip.  The pizza guy is here! 🙂
Thanks Bill from Papa Johns!

The first day of class

Tuesday marks the first day of classes here at MVNU, and I’m excited. For as long as I can remember, I have always anticipated the first day of school with excitement. There is just something very traditional about the way I get all of my new notebooks, pens, and pencils out of their packages and into the book bag. Planning the first outfit of the new school year is also just as equally as important. All of these things I do while reflecting on the past three months of summer.

Ah, summer. I love the smells, the sights, and the sounds of the lawn mowers as I’m driving about town. It’s very relaxing to me. September has snuck up on me this year. It just seems as though just yesterday I was taking my last final for spring semester. I’m not sure that I’m ready for the change that fall semester brings. Incorporating school into my crazy life is going to be a challenge, but for the first time since I set my schedule in May, I think it is going to be okay. Slowly, but surely I am coming to grips with the reality that the greatest summer ever is coming to a close.

I was thinking about it earlier today and realized that I have many people to thank for making my summer the most memorable of the short 21 years that I have been on this Earth. First and foremost, I need to thank you, the listener, for your generous support. It was through this support that I could spend my summer getting to know you and becoming a better broadcaster. For me, this isn’t just a summer job that someone hired me to complete. It was the experience of a lifetime. I learned a lot about myself as well as broadcasting. This experience would not have happened without your love and support. I feel as though God has laid it on my heart to tell you this. I know it might seem sometimes like we are consumed with our own lives and not here to serve you, but that isn’t true. If you need anything from us, just let us know. We will try to help you or point you in the right direction. We are here to help support you in your life, and we want to encourage you to have a deeper relationship with Jesus. I’ve realized how fortunate I am to be put in this position as a Morning Thing co-host, and I have you to thank for that. I hope that I can serve you to the best of my abilities for this next school year. Even though it is my last school year at MVNU, I hope that you never forget me, because I won’t forget you.

I hope you have a great day and may God bless you!

New Experiences: challenge vs. reward

Do you like change?  HA!  Not many people would answer yes.  I’ve been thinking about that crazy word this week.  Two years ago, this week, the Rineharts made a decision to change our lives forever.  We decided to get a dog!  I will never forget the afternoon that we made the call to buy our little Belle.  We were all together downtown at the Dan Emmett Music and Arts Festival.  Rachel and I had been doing our research for about 2 months.  We needed a non-shedder since we all have allergies.  We wanted a small dog that could go with us to our many events.  We also wanted a dog that would snuggle.  So we found a cute 1.5 pound miniature Yorkie (who is now 3 pounds)!

She has definintely changed our lives and has given us some new experiences. Some of these new experiences have been challenging, like cleaning up her little “deposits” from the back bedrooms, getting her to eat her own food or teaching her not to bark at everything that moves.  It’s amazing though that through every challenge, there is always a reward.  I LOVE having my little Belle greet me at the door every day when I come home.  It doesn’t matter what has happened during the day or what is waiting for me inside; I know that Belle will be super excited to see me when I walk through the door.  I know that she will be there to show me love.

I wish that I could remember that with each new challenge, there is a reward coming.  Are you like me?  I fight change.  My stomach gets upset, I don’t sleep well and I analyze every possible scenario of a situation.  God is teaching me to rest in His grace and to let Him have control.  In fact, Proverbs 3:5 and 6 are my favorite bible verses.  It’s kind of funny that God would give me a job with constant change – working in an office with the revolving door of college students as my staff members!

So what are the new challenges/experiences coming to your life?
– a new school year
– a new job
– a new baby
I am facing a new school year with a new student leadership team.  Will you pray for our Leadership Retreat, which is coming 8/19 – 8/22?  Joe and I will take our 10 student leaders away for an intense 4 day planning and spiritual retreat.  WNZR has just come through the experience of a power increase.  You won’t believe how many challenges this project has revealed…..and is still revealing (since our engineer was here yesterday talking about some equipment that is failing).  I am trusting God that the rewards will be revealed in the days to come.  I am also praying that every listener that tunes in to 90.9FM will hear a message of hope and grace.  Proverbs 3:5 & 6 is true – when you trust in God, he will direct and guide your path.

I’m so glad that on a sunny afternoon in August, our family decided to take on a new experience with all its challenges and rewards.  Little Miss Belle Marie Rinehart is a tiny reminder that it’s good to face a new challenge!

False hope in a fake king

On Thursday night, LeBron James announced his decision to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers to play with the Miami Heat.  This announcement was made in a live TV program broadcast on ESPN.  Thousands (or maybe millions) of people watched  as they anxiously waited to hear what LeBron would do.  We (Sam and Marcy) were watching.

LeBron James has been proclaimed to be a “king” or “savior of Cleveland”.  As we watched his television special, we were shocked by some of the things he said.  He said that his decision wasn’t made until he got up on Thursday morning and talked to his mother.  If this is true, why were sources close to LeBron reporting that he had already decided on Miami several days before the event?  He also said that this decision was based on his future, a championship and his happiness.  Well…why didn’t he look happy?  If this decision is the best thing for him, his life and his career – why wasn’t he showing more excitment?  He also kept saying that…”this is just business”…well, then if it is just business, why not just have a press conference, why make this announcement in a boys and girls club?

The fact is LeBron made his decision – and that decision was to create the most media hype possible around his choice for a team.  Some will say he is wonderful for raising millions of dollars for the boys and girls club.  True??  YES!  This is a wonderful organization that is helping kids throughout the country.  Our question – why not spend a few minutes talking about what the organization does or even better, talking to some of the kids in the gym????  Some will say LeBron used his location to soften the blow for Cleveland fans.  After all, how can Cavs fans complain when he used his departure to raise money for charity?

The truth is LeBron is right, this is just business – contracts were signed and the deal was made. But should it be? Should the business of basketball receive prime-time focus and cause riots in the street? Should we ever label anyone as a “King” or a “Savior”?  We are so quick to name sports figures as heroes, putting them on a pedestal and giving them so much of our time and attention just because they excel at a sport.  Think about this – what were those boys and girls in that Greenwich gym thinking?  Was the message one of a bright future or unlimited potential?  Or was the message that winning and thinking of only your own happiness is the most important thing of all?  Great things will be done with the money that was raised through this “decision” event – we are not disputing that fact.  The sad thing is that the world COULD have seen a superstar display loyalty and selflessness.  Isn’t the true definition of a hero, someone that sacrifices for others? We don’t think that happened Thursday night.

We feel for all Cavs fans today, but want to encourage everyone to act responsibly.  Burning jerseys, tearing down signs or acting foolish will not change any decision that has been made.  What can change the world is when we reach out to each other – be heroes, give of our time, sacrifice for others.  How about this?  Why don’t we all pick a worthy organization and volunteer for a few hours!  Instead of spending time and money on a “Keep LeBron in Ohio” event, why don’t we put our efforts where we can really make a difference?!

Let us know what you think!

Now I have to go get a box of Kleenex for Sam!  🙂
