Dressing for a Rainy Day and Operation Christmas Child- The Morning Thing 11/4/15

We are currently experiencing an Indian Summer. You may love the sunshine and the high of 73. Or maybe you wish that fall would just be fall and be colder. Regardless of your opinion of the warmer recent temperatures the sunshine is not going to last forever. Along with the glorious promises of the weekend, Friday will be bringing an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Yikes. But since you’ve been warned in time you will be able to plan accordingly for it. Good thing that we were shared the Do’s and Don’t’s of dressing for rainy weather. You can check out all of the suggestions here.

As we get further into November we are also steadily drawing closer to the collection day for Operation Christmas Child Shoe Boxes. As you think about packing a shoe box this year you can check out this conversation we had with Jaki Steward. She herself received a shoe box while an orphan in Guatemala. You can hear her incredible story here.

And don’t forget the two plays opening this weekend! You can get information on Mount Vernon High School and Middle School’s production of the Secret Garden here and find out about MVNU’s production of the Rainmaker here.

Clergy Appreciation Month wraps up with winners on WNZR!

clergy appreciation month-01

We announced our 5 final winning pastors for Clergy Appreciation Month.
Congratulations to these pastors! They each win a $20 gift certificate to Jake’s Restaurant plus the Kyle Idleman book “Aha – The God Moment That Changes Everything”.

Congratulations to:

Pastor Andy Loos from Liberty Church in Howard.
Brendan Dube nominated Andy. Here is what Brendan told us about Pastor Loos.
Brendan loves her pastor because he truly exemplifies what it means be to a vessel for the Lord. Along with his wife, Jennifer, he is so giving of himself and his time. He goes out of his way to minister to others. He is very family orientated with his own family and church family. Both he and his wife have a heart after the Lord and for the things of God. Pastor Andy doesn’t sugar-coat the Gospel, but does preach in love. When you ask him his opinion regarding a situation, he will take you to the Word and see what it has to say about it, and discuss it further with you. That is important to me in my walk with Christ. Those are just a few reasons why I love my pastor.
Jonathan also nominated Andy. Here is what Jonathan told us about Pastor Loos.
Pastor Loos was there for me when I was at the lowest part of my life. My family was falling apart, I was heading for a nasty divorce, my kids were being taken from me and I almost went to jail. I called my Pastor and he answered. He didn’t look down me. He prayed with me and told me what the word of God said and counseled me and my wife. With God’s help and healing, we are still married today with three wonderful children. We are serving God together and that is why I love my pastor. We are truly blessed by God for our Pastor and his will to serve people.

Pastor Justin Meier from Grace Baptist Church in Mount Vernon.
Heather nominated Justin. Here is what Heather told us about Pastor Meier.
I love my pastor for many reasons, but at the top of my list is his love for the congregation. Although he works 40+ hours at his secular job, he still makes time for each of them. His love for the ministry is overflowing and he has such a deep desire to reach others with the love of Christ and the gospel. His stand for the truth is much appreciated! He doesn’t compromise the Word and stands firm but does it with such love. Our pastor is easy to talk to and immediately makes everyone feel like they’ve known him forever and that they could talk to him about anything… We love our pastor!

Pastor Greg Weyrich from Vineyard Church of Knox County in Mount Vernon .
Amy Hudson nominated Greg. Here is what Amy told us about Pastor Weyrich.
Pastor Weyrich is a man with a heart for Christ. He has a desire for finding his place in God’s story while leading his congregation to do the same. His passion for knowing Jesus and making Him known is evident not only through his messages on Sundays but through who he is as a person. Greg is not only a wonderful pastor; he is a great teacher and friend. I am grateful to God for placing Greg at VCKC as our Pastor!

Pastor Gavin Cole from Apostolic Christian Church in Mount Vernon .
Daniel Hamman nominated Gavin. Here is what Daniel told us about Pastor Cole.
Pastor Cole is the new youth pastor at ACC. He is a phenomenal addition for our church youth. He has a passion and dedication to serve God through ministering to the youth of our church and our community.

Pastor Russ Gumm from First Church of the Nazarene in Mount Vernon.
Jan Taylor nominated Russ. Here is what Jan told us about Pastor Gumm.
Pastor Russ Gumm truly has the heart of a caring pastor! He values each member of his congregation, warmly showing them they are special – in his eyes AND in God’s eyes. Pastor Gumm leads his flock toward The Shepherd through his biblical messages and his intercessory prayer. He is visionary, dedicated, and, most of all; he loves God with all that is in him! I am proud to call him my pastor!
Denise Parks also nominated Russ. Here is what Denise told us about Pastor Gumm.
Pastor Gumm comes each Sunday excited to share God’s word! He loves his people and cares for them! He was there for me when I lost my mom; traveling 2 hours to attend her service. Pastor’s prayers for us during the service are from his heart. I appreciate my pastor!

Congratulations to these pastors.
All nominated pastors were entered into a grand prize drawing.
Congratulations to Pastor Fred Shoemaker, our grand prize winner!
He pastors 2 churches – the Seventh Day Adventist Church on South Edgewood Road in Mount Vernon and Mount Vernon Hill 7th Day Adventist Church on Wooster Road. Pastor Shoemaker wins an overnight stay at the Mount Vernon Grand Hotel!

Do you have the same personality as your dog? A Canine Personality Study by Natural Balance says YES!

We’ve all heard the old cliche that people look like their dogs, but would you be surprised to find out that people and their dogs tend to socialize, eat, and learn new skills in very similar ways, too?
According to the “Natural Balance Canine Personality Study”— a survey of 1,015 U.S. dog parents conducted by Natural Balance Pet Foods in conjunction with Learndipity Data Insights — Americans love dogs who are often just like them:

1. PEOPLE CHOOSE DOGS WHO ACT JUST LIKE THEM
66% of extroverted people have extroverted dogs — and there’s a 65% chance that an introverted dog will have an introverted human parent. If you’re a choosy eater, your dog is 3 times more likely to be one as well. If you identify as a lifelong learner, then there’s a 72% chance your dog will be good at learning new tricks.

2. DOGS DISPLAY COMPLEX EMOTIONS, JUST LIKE WE DO
Dogs’ personalities are highly nuanced and they experience many emotions that are all too familiar to us humans. If you’re hurt or late coming home, 90% of dog parents believe your dog is worried about you. 79% say dogs can feel embarrassment, while 93% are certain they’ve seen their dog smile.

3. DOGS STRONGLY INFLUENCE THE EMOTIONS OF THEIR HUMAN PARENTS
According to 79% of dog parents, their dogs consciously and actively attempt to comfort them. 55% report that their dog looks at them with loving eyes that communicate deep emotion. 52% say their dog is able to accurately sense when they are sad.

Natural Balance has also launched a new ‘Natural Characters’ website showcasing the unique personalities of dogs and cats across the U.S. Pet parents can upload their own furry characters there, too. Click HERE to get to the website.

Troubled Tummys and Preparing Your Car for Winter – The Morning Thing 10/27/15

Today, The Morning Thing shared some information that can help you in life.

Do you have a troubled tummy?

severestomachpainsymptomsHere are 5 tips for better natural digestion from Natasha Treney, the founder of America’s probiotic industry and developmental scientist with Natren, Inc.

There’s no denying that we Americans love to eat. Unfortunately, our love affair with food is all-too-often accompanied by an unwelcome outcome at the end of the meal: a troubled tummy and grumbling gut. Three of our most common digestive complaints are:

Upset Stomach:
Upset stomachs and stomach aches are very common in adults and can occur occasionally or as often as every day. They can include various symptoms including a feeling of fullness during a meal, uncomfortable heaviness after a meal, nausea, and burning or pain in the upper abdomen.

Infrequent Bowel Movements:
Infrequent bowel movement — fewer than three times weekly — affects about 42 million Americans and is one of the most common gastrointestinal problems. In some studies elderly participants performed bowel movements as infrequently as twice monthly. The problem typically arises from insufficient intake of fluid and fiber, laxative overuse, a stomach or intestinal blockage, nerve or muscle damage, or weak intestinal muscles.

Loose or Watery Stools:
This is a defense mechanism where the body tries to rid itself of something it perceives as harmful. However, during this process the body also flushes out beneficial bacteria needed to fight harmful bacteria in the digestive tract, which can trigger adverse health consequences.

For those who have consulted their health care professional(s) but still haven’t been able to satisfactorily resolve their digestive issues with prescription medicines and are concerned with the harmful side effects or overuse of over-the-counter remedies, developmental scientist Natasha Trenev of Natren, Inc. suggests it might be time to try a more holistic approach to digestive health using her 5 Tips for Better Natural Digestion:

1. Turn off your Smartphone at mealtimes
Besides getting older, stress is the number one factor that promotes poor digestion. Stress reduces the number of beneficial bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract – and we need these beneficial bacteria to break down our food so it can be properly absorbed through the intestinal walls. A relaxed dining environment accompanied by music and laughter, with no frantic phone calls or texts, will help your digestive organs operate most efficiently.

2. Chew 10 times and savor every bite before swallowing
The digestive process begins in the mouth, so chew slowly and taste what you’re eating.

3. Avoid simple carbs; eat complex carbs in moderation
Raw or minimally processed fruits, whole grains, and veggies provide vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber and are accompanied by their own enzymes which aid digestion.

4. Consume plenty of water and fiber
This helps keep food moving through your 27-foot-long gastrointestinal tract so it can be properly processed, absorbed, and efficiently eliminated.

5. Establish and maintain the proper quantities and types of intestinal flora (probiotics)
Without the right combination of probiotic bacterial strains in our gut, proper digestion could not take place. These beneficial bacterial strains complete the digestive process and they make sure the size of the digested food is broken down to the right molecular size to pass the intestinal wall so it doesn’t aggravate the immune system. These probiotics also create important enzymes and vitamins required for digestion. Our probiotic levels can become reduced through the use of antibiotics, artificial sweeteners, poor diet, and by stress.

Trenev says one simple way to ensure your digestive tract is ready for meals is to take a Healthy Tummy probiotic wafer and a glass of warm water before eating. Doing this not only assists to establish optimal digestion, but it also helps to relax any cravings for sweets.

We will soon be talking about winter.
Is your car ready for the upcoming change in seasons?
boise-meridian-idaho-cold-weather-car-start

Consider this: Millions of Americans will hit the road to visit family this holiday season even though their cars aren’t cold-weather-ready. (Last year, AAA anticipated rescuing 1.1 million drivers from December 23rd to January 4th alone.) So what can you do to avoid getting stranded on a dark, lonely highway, while ensuring you’re not getting overcharged for preventative work?

The car repair experts at RepairPal [www.repairpal.com] — a nationwide network of certified, pre-screened repair shops on a mission to help you find a fair price for quality work — have five critical tips:

1. DO AN ENGINE CHECK-UP
Cold weather makes engine problems worse, so issues that might seem minor now — like stalling, hard starting, or rough idling—could become costly headaches. Have all engine issues diagnosed and repaired before heading out in the cold (and be sure to find a shop with certified technicians to avoid shoddy work or overcharging).

2. BEWARE OF WEAK BATTERIES
Without a professional inspection, it’s impossible to know your battery’s strength, but you can do preventative work by cleaning the surfaces of the battery and scraping away any corrosion from the cable connections and posts. (Wear gloves and protective eyewear to avoid contact with battery acid and corrosive deposits.)

3. DO AWAY WITH DULL WIPERS
Bad wipers aren’t just annoying — they’re dangerous. Replace old blades and make sure your washer fluid reservoir is filled at all times. If your climate is particularly harsh, rubber-clad (winter) blades can fight against ice build-up.

4. GET RID OF ‘TIRED’ TIRES
Tire pressure tends to drop in cold weather, so check it several times throughout the winter months. And if the treads on your tires are worn down, have them replaced. Make sure your spare tire and jack are in good condition, too.

5. BE PREPARED
Better safe than sorry, right? Create an emergency car kit with the following items: a blanket, boots and gloves, an ice scraper, windshield washer fluid, jumper cables, a first-aid kit, flares, a small snow shovel, a flashlight, kitty litter (for traction when stuck in the snow), and bottled water.

For help with these steps that could save you time, money, and maybe even your life-the free resource RepairPal [www.repairpal.com] independently certifies auto repair shops nationwide. They provide data on the average cost of each repair, and offer trusted customer reviews — eliminating the need to shop around.
