WNZR is always excited to connect you with the arts in Knox County. One of our long-time partners in this effort has been local theatre production company MTVArts. This summer, MTVArts is bringing the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic The Sound of Music to Mount Vernon. Based on the true story of the Van Trapp Family, The Sound of Music tells the story of a young governess who brings music and joy back to a broken family. It also contains some of Broadway’s most famous musical numbers, such as Do Re Mi, My Favorite Things, Sixteen Going on Seventeen, and the titular song.

Alyssa Sidle of the Morning Thing had the opportunity to talk with many of the cast and crew members involved in this production. “I’m Boooored!”

Those two words, especially when drawn out in a whining groan, can drive any parent insane after only one use. When it’s repeated the plummet to insanity happens even faster. Kids can get bored easily, even more so now with all the constant media stimulation that leads to shortened attention spans. However, boredom is not inherently bad. It is an opportunity for kids to learn to think creatively, use their imaginations, and take initiative in coming up with something to do. For parents, the challenge is to encourage these skills in kids rather than keep their schedules so busy that they never have time to stop and think for themselves.

The Big Blue Crew missed a lot of things last summer, and one of the ones we missed the most were the parades. Thankfully they are back for this year! We already had the privilege of taking part in the Mount Vernon Memorial Day Parade and this Saturday we will be in another one.
