What is Your Favorite Fair Animal? The Morning Thing Blog 7/28/16

It’s Fair Fave 5 Week! We are sharing our favorite things about the Knox County Fair. Today on the Morning Thing we talked about our favorite animals seen at the fair!

So many different animals are found at the fair, and they are involved in lots of unique shows and events!

With every animal AND kid at the fair, there is a story! HERE is Dan Monnin talking with Aric Lust about his animals.

All of the kids with animals in the fair have worked so hard for this week! It’s awesome to see them compete and show the judges their animals. If you have an animal in the fair, come find us at Big Blue and tell us about it! We would love to hear how your animal showed.

What is your favorite event/show at the Knox County Fair? The Morning Thing 7/27/16

DSC03930The Morning Thing is celebrating the Knox County Fair this week by sharing a Fair Fave 5 every day!
On Wednesday (7/27), we shared our favorite Fair events and shows.

1.Rough Truck. This is always a FUN and EXCITING event. Why? You never know what is going to happen when the trucks go through the obstacle course.
What is Rough Truck?(from the Knox County Fair website) It is high-flying, fast paced action when local competitors push their street trucks to the limit over the obstacle course in front of the Grandstand.  See local competitors in their Fords, Chevy’s, Dodges, Toyotas, Jeeps, and more dash for the cash and to claim the title of Knox County’s Roughest Truck ! Release Form must be signed at the time of
entry by driver. Click HERE to find out more information and see the amazing prizes! See the Rough Truck Contest Wednesday at 7pm at the Grandstand.
*Look for 3 time National Champion, Adam Blankenhorn in the competition tonight!*

2. Figure 8 School Bus and Truck Races. This is a race, not a demo derby. School buses must be moving forward in a figure 8 formation. If they are trapped, they have to wait until it is clear to  move. This race is SO much fun to watch because, well, school buses have a difficult time turning in a figure 8. They are also heavier than regular cars or trucks. You never know what is going to happen! Click HERE to find out more information and to see the rules of this race.

3. Junior Fair Sale of Champions. This event last year (including the dairy product sale) brought in $79,259.50! This is always an exciting event in the multi-purpose building on Thursday morning of the Knox County Fair. Join WNZR LIVE from 9:30am – 11:30am on Thursday as we bring your results as each grand and reserve champion animal is sold.

4. Friday night’s concert is always a BIG draw for Knox County citizens, especially country music fans. This year, Parmalee is coming to the fair for an 8pm show. Parmalee is an American county music band consisting of brothers Matt Thomas and Scott Thomas along with cousin Barry Knox and Josh McSwain. Parmalee made history when its multi-week #1 smash “Carolina” became the longest climbing single by a duo or group in the 24-year history of the Billboard Country Airplay Chart. Other hits include Already Callin’ You Mine and Musta Had a Good Time. Tickets are on sale now. Please call the Fair Board Office to order.740-397-0484

5. Go Cart Races! The fun event has become a crowd favorite. The horse pulling track became a very active go cart racetrack on Tuesday night. Click HERE to check out this fun video taken by WNZR Staff Member, Dan Monnin. (Arrow down to the section with all videos and click on the first one that says “Go Cart Racing”).

The Morning Thing is celebrating the Knox County Fair this week by sharing a Fair Fave 5 every day!
On Tuesday (7/26), we shared (more than 5) of our favorite Fair participants.

Here are some of your favorites:
Robin McClay  – My favorite fair participant is this years queen Holly McClay. Holly works hard on all of her projects but always finds time to help others. She begins every fair week attending the fair worship service with her family and does her best to follow and represent Christ through out the week.
Click HERE to hear Marcy Rinehart’s conversation with the 2016 Junior Fair Queen, Holly Mcclay.

Tomi Whittington Ward – My favorite fair participant would be my daughter , Reagan! She is showing broilers ( meat chickens) She has taken great care of her birds this year and we are very proud of her!

Jill Spearman Macklin – My favorite fair participants are my nieces and nephews who show hogs!!! And my brother who races his horses. I have 16 nieces and nephews who have all been fair exhibitors over the last 30 plus years. My dad, great uncle, uncles, and brother have all raced horses for years and years. My five brothers and sisters have all been in 4-H and or FFA and have all shown animals at the fair. Needless to say, my family enjoys the fair!

Ruth Robey Frady – I loved being a fair participant when I was a young girl in the 60’s. 4-H sewing groups were extremely popular, with countless booths filling up the huge project building. I proudly belonged to the Jolly Juniors 4-H Club, who were always winning honorable mentions with their elaborate displays protected behind that ever present chicken wire! I once tied for first place to take my lounge wear to the State Fair! With complimentary tickets all week long, this Jolly Junior practically lived at the Knox County Fairgrounds.(checking out all of the cute guys up in the livestock barns, of course)!

Cell phones, germs and Kool-Aid – The Morning Thing 7/21/16

Original_Ryan-Reed_How-to-Clean-Cell-Phone-5.jpg.rend.hgtvcom.616.411

Did you know that your cell phone is covered in germs? Today, we shared how to clean your cell phone.
Numerous studies have been conducted in recent years, and the results are all pretty much the same. Essentially, your phone is a breeding ground for germs and it’s dirtier than a toilet seat. A few of the standout germs that could be lurking on your phone include E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus.

kool-aid

We also shared 11 mind-blowing ways that you can use Kool-Aid. It is NOT just for drinking.

You can use it to clean the toilet and your dishwasher. It will take rust off of your driveway or sidewalk. You can even make flavored lip gloss!

Games are GREAT – The Morning Thing 7/20/16

Family-Playing-Board-Game

Today, The Morning Thing talked about the benefits of playing games.

Does your family have a game night? You might think about scheduling one, once you see the many benefits of “playing together”.

www.beingconfidentofthis.com shares 6 benefits of playing games:

  1.  Quality family time.
  2. Media-free entertainment.
  3. Frugal entertainment. (It is NOT expensive to play games).
  4. Learning new skills.
  5. Learning sportsmanship.
  6. Learning about others.

Click HERE to read the entire article about how fun and entertaining game night can be for your family.

www.scholastic.com also shares the benefits of playing games.

What your child most wants — and needs — is to be with you with no goal in mind beyond the joy of spending time together. He wants you to take pleasure in him, play with him, and listen to him. Nothing bolsters his self-esteem more! So why not pull out an old board game tonight? Playing games is an easy and excellent way to spend unhurried, enjoyable time together. As an added bonus, board games are also rich in learning opportunities. They satisfy your child’s competitive urges and the desire to master new skills and concepts, such as:

  • number and shape recognition, grouping, and counting
  • letter recognition and reading
  • visual perception and color recognition
  • eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity

Non-verbal communication – do you know what your body language is saying? The Morning Thing 7/19/16

Nonverbal-Communication-SmartTalent

The Morning Thing talked about the power of non-verbal communication.

They shared 8 Body Language Traps You Need to Avoid in Your Career.

TRAP #1: Using too many head tilts.

TRAP #2: Physically condensing.

TRAP #3: Using girlish gestures.

TRAP #4: Smiling excessively.

TRAP #5: Nodding too much.

TRAP #6: Flirtatious behavior.

TRAP #7: Being emotionally over-expressive.

TRAP #8: Having a delicate handshake.

Click HERE to read more about these 8 Body Language Traps You Need to Avoid from Carol Kinsey Goman, author of The Silent Language of Leaders: How Body Language Can Help–or Hurt–How You Lead.

The Morning Thing also shared 5 Power Poses that you should start using at work. The way you stand in the workplace can make a huge impact on those around you. A shoulder shrug can literally make you go from leader to passive follower. According to The Wall Street Journal, new research shows that using powerful body language can actually change a person’s hormones and behavior, just as if she had real power. You don’t have to be a superhero to command attention: you just have to stand like one.

Research found that power poses can reduce the stress hormone cortisol and lead to an increase in testosterone. Even if you move out of that position, the hormone changes will linger. Click HERE to read more about the 5 Power Poses that you should try.

And now…for some pictures! Check out the meanings behind this non-verbal communication. What messages are you sending??

How to get out (and stay out) of the Doghouse! The Morning Thing 7/18/16

dog-house-1000x570

Today is Get Out of the Doghouse Day.

Are you in trouble with somebody you care about? Get Out Of The Doghouse Day is like a ‘get out of jail free card’ from the game Monopoly – use it to apologize, mend hurts and get back to normal.

We found 5 keys to getting out of the doghouse from www.allprodad.com

  1. Listen, listen, listen.
  2. Let the restitution fit the crime.
  3. Don’t sweat the small stuff (being right is very small stuff).
  4. Never minimize your culpability.
  5. Be randomly wonderful.

Click HERE to read the entire article.

We also shared 10 reasons that your marriage isn’t thriving. These insights are perfect for Get Out Of The Doghouse Day. As we take a look at our marriage relationship, we can identify what areas are sending us to the doghouse.

The bible gives us a clear picture of how to love. Please take a moment to read these powerful verses.

1 Corinthians 13 (NIV)

13 If I speak in the tongues[a] of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,[b] but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
