It’s Brothers and Sisters Day!

This morning I shared a story on the air about my sister. She is five years older than me and has always wished she had a younger sister. After all, being the only girl with two younger brothers can be quite aggravating. Our relationship got off to a rocky start when at age 5 she told her parents as they were leaving to go to the hospital to have me, “if it’s a girl then call. If it’s not, don’t bother.” She was incredibly excited when they called, only to be disappointed and upset when she discovered that they had called anyways despite her instructions. What a great start.

But our relationship hasn’t always been bad. Sure, she made me be the dog when she and my brother and I would play house, but we’re still close. That’s the beauty of siblings. Sure, there are times you want to disown them. Maybe even personally strangle them for that obnoxiously aggravating thing they always do that drives you up a wall. But despite those times you can still love them and be a close as, well, siblings.

So today we talked about Brothers and Sisters Day. This is your day to honor your siblings. Maybe you give them a call. Maybe you make amends about the latest disagreement between you. Maybe you hang out. Perhaps you can work together and make the recipe of the day, which is, weirdly, homemade ketchup. Whatever you do, remember that siblings are a blessing. Happy Brothers and Sisters Day!
